Dallas police killed
« on: July 08, 2016, 06:38:17 am »
Frankly, given today's environment, I am surprised something like this has not happened sooner

 – Five police officers have been killed and at least six injured in what Mayor Mike Rawlings calls a "heartbreaking moment for the city of Dallas." Police say the officers were shot "ambush-style" by at least two snipers in elevated positions during a march to protest police shootings of black men in Louisiana and Minnesota, ABC reports. Some of the officers were shot in the back, and a witness says the snipers "were strategic. It was tap tap pause. Tap tap pause." Around 2am, police announced that a fifth officer had died from his injuries. The AP reports that Dallas police say one suspect is now in custody and a "person of interest" whose photo was circulated has surrendered. Earlier, the Dallas Morning News reported that one suspect had been cornered in a parking garage.

Four Dallas police officers and one Dallas Area Rapid Transit officer were killed in the shooting, which happened just before 9pm Thursday as demonstrators made their way through downtown. Police say the suspect now in custody was arrested after a shootout and a suspicious package found nearby is being dealt with by the bomb squad, the Guardian reports. Public transport has been suspended and authorities have urged people to leave the downtown area. "I ask everybody to focus on one thing right now and that is Dallas police officers, their families, those that are deceased, those that are in the hospital fighting for their lives," Mayor Rawlings says. "Let's all come together and support our police officers."

And let me guess: Guns are to blame, and gun control is the answer?  Race had nothing to do with it?

It is terrible, yes.  No, I am not surprised.  When you paint yourselves as the perpetual victims, and law enforcement as your oppressors, some in your community are going to react violently.

I am glad this happened in Texas, where the death penalty has strong support.

I am thinking that is going to turn out to be a single shooter acting alone. I bet the three in custody are unrelated to any of this.

Watched Lynch. Amazing she didn't call it a hate crime although the Dallas Police Chief stated the killer remarked that he "wanted to kill white people, especially white cops".

Hillary is probably cheering as her problems have been knocked off the media.

And this was "allegedly" in response to the two most recent killings by police of black men.

No.  It wasn't.  Those were used as an excuse.

However, as a sorta related aside:
I watched a couple of the videos on the Alton Sterling shooting in Baton Rouge (with the sound off).  From what can be seen, I can't tell why the officer pulled his gun.  It appears to have been intended as an intimidation tactic, because he initially points it at Sterling then keeps it in his hand as they're moving around on the ground.  My guess, and it is only that, is that he screwed up and pulled the trigger when he shouldn't have, and there was no legitimate reason to do so.

Regarding the shooting in Minnesota, my understanding is that the driver, Mr. Castile, had previously told the officer he had a weapon.  The girlfriend stated that he had a permit, but whether the officer heard that is unknown.  Mr. Castile was allegedly reaching for his wallet, in response to the officer's instructions, and the officer shot him.  Now, logic says that if someone tells the officer he has a weapon, the next questions from the officer should be "where is it?" and "do you have a permit?" (assuming a permit is required).  At this point, my thought is that the officer got twitchy at the knowledge that the driver had a gun, and pulled his "to be ready" without first determining if there was any thing to worry about.  Then when the driver followed the instructions he had been given, the officer reacted to his "to be ready" mindset, and shot the driver without proper provocation.

Those are my initial thoughts on both shootings.  And only on these two shootings.  At this point, I think both shoots were probably unjustified.  I'm not dissing on cops.  One of my best friends from college is a cop.  But the reality is that are some out there who don't like that people other than them can legally carry.

I've been pulled over four times while carrying.  The first time I handed over my permit with my driver's license.  The deputy handed it back and ignored it.  Didn't care.  I still got a speeding ticket.  The second time the young deputy told me I was required to tell him (not true in Oregon).  I didn't argue, but said, "I'm sorry.  They must have just changed the law."  He dropped it, and I just got a warning.  The third time I didn't hand over the permit with the license, and the officer never asked (but he knew me from when he worked at the gun store, so probably assumed I was carrying).  The last time I didn't provide the permit, and the officer never asked.  I earned that ticket.  So, four encounters, two tickets, and only one officer who seemed to have a chip on his shoulder.  One thing though.  When the deputy asked if I had a gun, I told him, "Yes, but I have a permit."  All six words together.  He asked where, and I told him "on my right hip".  I already had my wallet on the dash when he walked up to the passenger window, so my license was handy.  I got the impression he didn't like it that I had the gun, so I made darn sure my hands went nowhere near it.

Heard an interview with the national head of FOP---said he was going to be meeting with Lynch----to push that it be investigated as a hate crime..................and he was going to push to change hate crime laws to include first responders

In the video from LA you can see the right shoulder of Sterling dip twice as if he's reaching for his pocket. Early in the video, you hear an officer yell "gun" and after the shooting a gun is removed from the right pocket

In the video from Minnesota, we see nothing of what happened initially, only the aftermath. Although the girl says that the guy had a permit, I saw a report today that he had no permit and was being stopped because he matched the description of an armed robbery suspect. But media won't let stuff like that get on the way, Crucify Him!

Here in NC our yearly state mandated in-service included an excellent block on concealed and open carry. I'm usually under-whelmed by the state's in-service selections but this one was very cool. I hope it's a sign that even in liberal Raleigh and its Criminal Justice Training and Standards office, things are a changin'.

The first report is always wrong.

To borrow from the quote often (mis)attributed to Mark Twain, "A rumor can get halfway around the world before the truth can get its boots on."  Especially when that rumor conforms to anyone's pre-existing worldview.

In addition to Sterling's actions, he apparently had a long rap sheet, which means he was probably well known to the local police, and he was, in fact, a felon in possession of a firearm.

So what I'm seeing now is that there was only one shooter, who was able to shoot and move for a period until he was cornered/pinned down.  From what was found in his home, especially the bomb making stuff, it appears he was preparing for SOMETHING for a good while.  The LA and MN shootings may have provided a trigger, and the Dallas demonstration, with its accompanying police presence, provided a 'target rich' opportunity.

I'll say it, 'cause no one else has.  What has me concerned, is that along with the anti gun BS, this is going to give the current administration more ammo to support their attack on vets. They already list us as potential domestic terrorists.

Do we forget that cops were primarily still using 6 Shot Revolvers well through the mid 80's? It wasn't until after 1986 that most departments then relented and went to autos.
Capacity wasn't really an issue then... and honestly really it's not even an issue now.
