The USS Yorktown moving 20 knots in reverse!  :hmm

"Some carriers, like the Essex Class carrier USS Yorktown (above) could land aircraft from the bow while steaming in reverse. Who knew? It makes some degree of sense however, if the aft flight deck is on fire from a bomb or crash and aircraft need to get down. Essex Class carriers could steam 20 knots in reverse and had arrestor wires on the forward flight deck."

Fascinating.

That one struck me, too.  Amazing the amount of planning/foresight that went into something like that -- putting something so massive into reverse was no  small feat in itself.

Some great photos there.  Thanks for posting.
A nice visual record of some amazingly brave people too.
