Either the Top Guns or Top Shots episode... last week, iirc - where they were shooting the Webleys and the Enfield - they showed footage of Ian running a competition course in a kilt.

First time I wore a kilt, I was "mugged" within ten, fifteen minutes.  It was 3am, and she showed up at my door.

Your Irish side is correct, but methinks you are possibly not understanding the full implications.

A few years back, I was celebrating New Year's in the traditional fashion at one of the better bars here in Athens, and ran into one of the more fetching grad students from my department, and her current beau.  A guy wearing a kilt ended up parked nearby, and the lot of us started talking.  At one point, she asked if he was wearing it "in full tradition", and he replied he was, and asked her if she wanted to check.

She did... and she did, ending up with a handful of buttcheek (arguably, better than the alternative (depending on who you ask)).

After a bit, the conversation wound down, and the guy wandered off.

I noticed she hadn't used that hand for anything since, and said "You really want to go wash your hand, don't you?"

"YES," she said, and bolted for the restroom.

Her date and I were amused.

It does take a hell of a man to wear a kilt.

And despite my mother's Irish name, and my father's Scottish name, I cannot bring myself to wear one.

I have friends who wear kilts from time to time, but it's always for a party. They follow tradition.

    I just couldn't do it.

And some evidence that before either kilts or pants the Irish wore tunics....belted dresses?

Not disparaging them in any way...Scots (with a bit of Scandanavian) on my Dad's side, Irish/English/Welsh on my Mother's side.  Basically when the sun comes up I start to burn. :(
