I'm in need of a back up handgun. The conditions that need to be met are:
1. Less than or equal to $525 new
2. Concealable
3. .40 cal for ammo commonality with my duty weapon
4. Absolutley, Totally reliable.

I am open to suggestions and would like to hear what you all think.

Thanks

Glock 27.

Given the criteria, that's pretty much it.

Dumb question, I know, but does the Glock 27 have a single or double stack mag?

Glock 27.

In your price range, with those requirements, the Glock is tough to beat.

Double stack. Capacity is 9 rounds with flush fitting magazines.

What about a Kahr?  You can get them in .40, and they are a lot thinner than that Glock.

They tend to be a bit more than $525.

What is your duty gun? Might be a good idea to get the compact version of that gun to keep everything common, not just the ammo.

Kahr sounds like a good plan.  Glock Possibly.

Question: What about a Sig 239?  I haven't seen one in person (Friggin Montana Hates Sig Sauers I think....), but I thought they were relatively small?  Not a tiny gun, but just a little bigger than the small Glocks.

   P.S.  Kahr's more than $525?  Woah...I should look into them better....Maybe I shoulda picked that one up for $400  Hiding under a chair.....It was a 9MM though.

I carry a bit of an odd ball - A Wahlther P99 in .40 S&W.

Thinner would be major plus. I've shot Glocks before and they feel overly thick in my hand. However, actually owning one and shooting it on a regular basis would probably resolve that issue. I have no experience with Kahr products. Any recomendations on a Kahr model to look at? With another month or too of saving I can expand my price range a couple of hundred bucks.

Kahr CW40 MSRPs at $549. A tad outside your price range, but not by much. Kahr's are supposed to be really good guns, but the ones larger than 9mm (especially the polymer-framed guns) tend to have pretty significant recoil.

The Kahr Mk40 and PM40 are a lot more compact (what I think of as being backup sized), but the MSRP is around $900 and will retail around $650-700.

Hmm... no mini version of that... I was expecting M&P or Sig or PX4...

If there's one thing I've learned about buying guns it is this: Save as long as you need to buy what you want. When you settle for a cheaper gun that you can have right now, you'll end up with buyer's remorse. If you wait a bit longer and save a bit more, you'll be happier in the end.

Looking at the Kahr PM40 on their website. That looks like that will make the short list.

CZ 2075 RAMI maybe?  They mak them in both 9mm and .40.  Might be a little big though.

I hadn't thought of CZ. I like the fact that it's DA/SA. That fact might be enough to offset its somewhat larger size.

Try this Kahr, slim, single stack .40 S&W with enough grip to hang on to.  Usually runs under $400 over the counter, only comes with one magazine, but I have seen the .40 cal mags at two local dealers for about $40.

From what I've been hearing, the Ramis have been having issues. The Rami is also quite a chunk in weight.

Glock 27 if you carry a 22, 23, or 35. M&P .40C would also not be a bad choice.

Go with the G27.  That was my secondary when I carried a 22.

I'll step out and say a CPO Sig 229.  I carry one almost every day.  Not too much weight, accurate, good capacity, easy to shoot and shoots .40 like a pussy cat.  A CPO can be had for under your price limit.  The 239 is awesome and I'd recommend it but for 525 not sure if you'd be able to find one, as most run close to 600.

The 239 would be a decent bug but the 229 seems more like a primary. A little too big for a bug.
