I have been carrying concealed for a little over a year now and am very new to the handgun world.  I am selling my Glock 27, I carry a Glock 23, and am going to use the money to reinvest in a class that will teach me how to do more than put holes in paper.  I live around the Houston area and am not too familiar with classes offered that are in Texas.  I have contacted Suarez International about what they have to offer in Tyler and am considering taking their beginners Defensive Pistol Skills class.

I intend to continue to train but I need to start somewhere and do not have the resources to travel outside of Texas.  Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Mr Anderson, (GEEK Matrix Moment)
Have a wander by www.krtraining.com, we're just up the road between Bryan/College Station and Austin on HWY21.
Standard Disclosure, I teach for Karl at KRTraining. Have been since 96ish. We teach everything from Basic Pistol to some pretty high speed low drag classes and a bunch in between including Force on Force classes where your opponent walks talks and shoots back if needed. The basic concept is that most people cannot afford to take a week off and go to one of the big schools. We've been and have condensed the information down to drinking from a fire hose and offer classes on the weekends when most people can afford to make it. We get people up from Houston all the time for class so have a look and see if it would be something you're interested in.

FYI, one of the students from our early classes years ago wrote out his thoughts http://www.krtraining.com/KRTraining/ATphotos/PTB/at.html as the class progressed and made them into a Usenet Posting (remember those kids?). It's a pretty good synopsis of our push to train people about when to shoot as much as how to shoot.

We have since changed our class schedule around to make classes more friendly to people who only want to take a half day or whole day instead of a very long weekend.

Stay Safe!

Welcome to the board.

Keep an eye on Magpul Dynamics.  They have an entry-level handgun course that sounds like just what you're after, and they do it all over the country.  I don't see one in your area listed yet, but it changes from time to time.

Thanks TXGunGeek and Thernlund.

I will check both sites and see what fits my schedule and purpose.  My wife is also interested in attending a class, not necessarily a co-ed class.  I am sure I could look but is there anything women specific, ie. self defense/protection with or without a handgun offered?  She currently does not have her CHL, she will in or about 90 days, so can she even attend a class that involves a handgun?

Unless its a prereq for that specific class, she should have no problem getting into a Beginner Handgun class. I've never seen one listed that required a CHL.

The right to defend our lives and the lives of our loved ones is one of the "inalienable" rights our Founding Fathers deemed most precious. Some states have protected that right while others have neglected it. Knowing where states draw the line between your rights and the rights of those who seek to harm you, our family, or your property could be the most important knowledge of your lifetime. Stepping over the line could mean personal and financial disaster.
