One of these days I'm going to get an RPK, but before I decide on it, I want to know what's the best way to mount optics on it.  Does it have a side mount like an AK?  Are there aftermarket rails for it?  Would a LaRue irondot fit on it?  School me.

I don't think most aftermarket build RPKs have a side rail, but I don't see why one couldn't.  It's just an AK with a heavy walled receiver and a heavy barrel, like a VEPR.  VEPR rifles had side rails.

One of the pics from J&G sure makes it looks like there's a side rail on there:

(I hope the pic works, kinda hit and miss hotlinking fro J&G)

It didn't work.  That's okay.  I went and took a look.  One model showed that it had the side mount and the other did.  Too bad the one with the wire stock had the mount.  Not a fan of the wire stock.  So, some have side mounts and others don't.  Okay.  What about after market rails?

Most of the aftermarket AK stuff should fit, the receiver is basically the same with the exception of the larger front trunnion. I'm personally intrigued by the Dog Leg rail (it's spendy though):

Just adding a standard side rail should be pretty easy. I happen to have a pair of bolt cutters already modified for setting rivets of that sort  Grin

  I'll mention this:
 http://www.scoutscopes.com/

That was pointed at me by a WTA member!!   I haven't got my SKS scope yet, but the mount is solid, and firmly attached after 30-40 rounds shot (That's all though).

My point: They have the same mounts for AK-47's.  All the RPK's I've seen locally are simply long barreled AK's, rear sights are probably the same.

Typicly RPK sights are adjustable for windage as well as elevation while AK sights are just elevation. I also think, though I could be wrong that they are also ranged out another 200 meters or so compared to AK sights.
