I'm re-writing the novel that I've been working on for the last two years or so (got too emotionally attached to the characters and wrote myself into a corner as a result). I'm basically gutting it and starting over; new characters, new setting, and only keeping the same basic plotline. In this new version, the protagonist's preferred handgun is a customized Browning Hi-Power. I've got a few questions pertaining to said pistol.

What IDPA class would a Hi-Power be allowed to compete in? Would it even be a viable option to compete with?

The IDPA rule book bans pistols that have had any safety devices removed or disabled. Would this include a Hi-Power that had its magazine safety modified to allow the magazine to drop free?

Are Crimson Trace Lasergrips permitted in IDPA competition?

Also (sort of unrelated) is the Novak Custom Shop any good? They were the only ones I've found who offer that modified mag safety option (didn't find it on C&S).

Thanks in Advance.

EDIT: Whoops! Just realized I should've put this on the Competition board. Sorry! Mods, how can I move it there?

I don't think you can. But I can. So I did.

Unfortunately, I can't answer any of your other questions.

Going by memory, a Hi Power being single action and less than 45 cal would put it in Enhanced Service Pistol (ESP).  I've seen people using Hi Powers in club IDPA matches so you can do it.  Off the top of my head I don't recall rules about things like your mag release, or lack thereof.  At club level matches I doubt it would matter, so long as the gun is still safe to operate. In a major (state level or above) match they get more strict about all of the rules in the book though, so I'd read it more carefully or talk to the match director to be sure.

I know nothing of the IDPA rulebook, but you could juast have your guy using the newer "mouse trap" BHP mags that have this little mouse trap like spring at the bottom rear of the mag that rotates againt the base of the pistol and forcefully ejects the mag when the catch is pressed.

Unless the rules have recently been changed, and I'm not mistaken,
IDPA doesn't allow any sights except regular open ones.
Not even ghost ring sights.
But, like xsquidgator says, best to download the latest rules.
Your character will be in good company, carrying a HP.
Isn't that what Parker's guy, Spencer uses?

Thanks guys.

I actually read over the IDPA rule book, but still wasn't sure about those points since they weren't specific on the questions I had (I can be a bit too literal at times). Looks like my character can still roll with most of the modifications I had planned.

From how I'm understanding the rules (having finally looked in the glossary), it looks like the laser sights are a no-no. Could he still put Lasergrips on the gun, but keep them switched off during competition? You can disable those, right? And does anyone know anything regarding the Novak Custom Shop?

And does anyone know anything regarding the Novak Custom Shop?

I just had a sight package put on.  Quick service, good work, refinished the whole slide.  I am seriously considering another sight job with a new barrel bushing on a Springfield 1911.
