I am thinking about getting an AR, but I would like to get a varmint setup instead of a carbine.  Anybody know of a good entry level factory setup?

I have posted recently about a Polish AK-74 that I purchased a couple of months ago.  I have since added an Ultimak rail and a Vortex Strike Fire red dot sight.  It is a good/semi-accurate gun, but I am just not excited about this gun or shooting it.  I am going to give it another month of shooting to see if I fall in love with it or not.  It could be searching for a new home soon.  It may go on the auction block later this month, and the proceeds would go toward an Ar-15 set up for varmints.

Any input on the AR-15 would be greatly appreciated.

RRA A4 Varmint:
http://www.rockriverarms.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_id=228

About $1,100 MSRP, and it can shoot. I have seen stock versions do 1/2 MOA, and they are 3/4 MOA @ 100yd "guaranteed". Just need optics.
There are, however, MANY others that will do what you want. This is just one choice of many...it's probably going to come down to which is cheapest/you can find/you think looks coolest. Grin

That is a fine looking rifle.  Will the difference in barrel length affect accuracy out to 300 yards?

Barrel length does not affect accuracy.  It will affect velocity a tad, but not to the point where it would be a concern at 300 yards.

What he said. In fact, it can be argued that shorter barrels of the same diameter are MORE accurate, as they have less weight out at the tip, which causes flex and wobble. This MIGHT be a problem if you are trying to use a 60" barrel.  Velocity is affected, but as above, it won't do anything significant at 300yd.  If you plan on shooting out to 500+, get the 20", if not, either.

One that I have been looking at is the DPMS in .243 Win.  Anybody have any experience with those?

I'll second the RRA Varmint. Have one, shoots very well.

Ok, so I can't help myself. I have to recommend the Crusader Paladin rifle. It's designed for the varmint hunter. http://crusaderweaponry.com/main.php?view=rifles

Not yet. No I'm actually waiting on some parts to show so I can get pics of all of them together. Parts and pieces suck.

The right to defend our lives and the lives of our loved ones is one of the "inalienable" rights our Founding Fathers deemed most precious. Some states have protected that right while others have neglected it. Knowing where states draw the line between your rights and the rights of those who seek to harm you, our family, or your property could be the most important knowledge of your lifetime. Stepping over the line could mean personal and financial disaster.
