Those old planes don't do well "hot'n'heavy." I've seen a few of those C-141ski's around, bur never actually flying...

Daaaaaaaaaaaaamn. That was nuts! I guess in that case, the Russians were going for a "low speed, high drag" type of deal?
After seeing this (even though it's a cargo plane), I am not going to fly Aeroflot.  Nervous

I am continually amazed when I see those large planes take off. They are the bumblebees of the airplane world--they should not be able to fly, but they do.

The second pilot ain't too bright. He either loaded his airplane beyond the balanced field length-the distance it takes to accelerate to takeoff speed AND stop before the end of the runway- OR he didn't decide to abort the takeoff soon enough, and tried to stop without enough runway remaining. That'll burn your brakes up quick.

Now that I think about it, the first one probably did the same thing, but he was lucky.

eh.... he just went off the end of the runway to put out the brake fire using the dirt.  Shocked Shocked Shocked

Definitely made the decision to abort just a tad too late.

Sorry about the LL snafu.  Sometimes LL links work and other times they don't.  Thanks JesseL for the fix.

You gotta admire the ruggedness of the landing gear on the Russian IL-18.  The ruggedness of everything for that matter.  Looks like everything stayed intact and nothing buckled or bent noticeably.  I bet you could drag that thing out of the dirt, change out the brakes and fly the thing in an hour or two.

Another Russian jet, a TU 134 which ingested a bird at a very inopportune time during takeoff had a rougher time of it.

Ever wonder why you don't see Russian airliners in the US? THAT's why. Sure, Boeings are just as likely to eat birds as Ilyushins or Tupolevs, but American certification standards require an airliner to be able to lose an engine at rotation (when the nose comes off the ground during takeoff) and be able to climb to a safe altitude and return for a landing on just one engine. If this same incident happened to a Boeing, you'd have seen it flying away.

However, if you start frying chickens with BOTH engines, like the Hudson River crash, all bets are off. (And yes, it smells like roasted chicken when your engine eats a bird. Ask me how I know).

Is Russian, is TOUGH.
Who heard the stories about the African airlift from USAF officers.  Various outfits leased Russian Aircraft and many had British crews. 
In one case an IL-76 lost two engines on landing to birds.  The pilots put it down HARD.  The next day another IL arrived with a bunch of Polish techs and gear, they replaced both engines and inspected the plane and it flew out 15 minutes later!
