Student snaps pictures of bear before it kills him

WEST MILFORD, N.J. – A student was able to take a picture of a 300-pound black bear just before it chased him down and killed him.

Rutgers student, 22-year-old Darsh Patel, was hiking with friends in West Milford, New Jersey, when a couple warned a bear had been following them. The hikers continued despite the warning.

The Record reports the hikers spotted the bear about 100 feet away and started taking pictures when the animal walked towards them. The group split up and ran; four of them found each other but Patel was missing. Two hours later authorities found Patel’s body.

Officers said they found the bear close by and said they were forced to shoot it after it showed signs of aggression. Authorities examined the bear and found it had human tissue, blood and clothing in its stomach as well as human blood on its paws. Officials found photos of the bear on Patel’s phone  which they recovered near his body. They said the phone had a puncture mark through the screen.

Mistake 1. Going into the woods unarmed.

Mistake 2. Continuing up on the hike when they were WARNED about a seemingly aggressive bear.

Mistake 3. The group split up and ran.  :facepalm

There's a GROUP of you.  You can yell, throw rocks, poke it with sticks.  It's not going to eat all four of you.

Act like prey and the bear will think you are.

To be fair, it was in New Jersey.  I think attempting to carry a firearm there will get you life in prison.

Mistake 2. Continuing up on the hike when they were WARNED about a seemingly aggressive bear.

People thinks bears are harmless.  The bears beg to differ.

Mistake 3. The group split up and ran.

I don't know.  It seem to have worked out for three out of four.  You don't have to be the fastest guy, just don't be the slowest.

There's a GROUP of you.  You can yell, throw rocks, poke it with sticks.  It's not going to eat all four of you.

    BEARS: "Challenge accepted!"

Different bears react differently.  Black bears do not react the same to challenges as Brown bears.  You have to know what is out in nature to know what the dangers are, and how to react to those dangers.  I can't remember what the response for Blackies is, but if the bear was abnormally aggressive you would need bear spray or a gun for everyone to go home alive.

Was it a bear or was it really that Fat-mouthed, splatter-assed Chris Christie in a feeding frenzy, having already destroyed a nearby Chinese Buffet and was now in search of some curry based cuisine?

Do we forget that cops were primarily still using 6 Shot Revolvers well through the mid 80's? It wasn't until after 1986 that most departments then relented and went to autos.

Honestly, I feel really bad for Mr. Patel and his family.  That said, this is the funniest thread I've read in weeks.   :facepalm    :rotfl

I worked as a park ranger for seven years. Tourists in the woods are all too often fluffing idiots. They do the dumbest s___, s___ they would not do if they rubbed two brain cells together and said "Hmm, self, is doing this a smart idea?"

Many of them will continue on what they planned to do despite warnings and all effort to change their mind, and a long list of trying to convince them that they were proceeding with a Very. Bad. Idea.

I'll also say that Black Bears tend to be very afraid of people unless somebody has worked to change that, often by feeding the bears in an opportunity to entice the bear to stand still enough or come closer for a photo.
