Do we forget that cops were primarily still using 6 Shot Revolvers well through the mid 80's? It wasn't until after 1986 that most departments then relented and went to autos.
Capacity wasn't really an issue then... and honestly really it's not even an issue now.

I've always liked mules. There's a guy not too far from me who has a beautiful team, and my family has legends of my great grandfather's mule Ace, who of course didn't have but one eye.
Great story. I'm going to show it to my dad.

I love mules too. My (and SLM's) grandfather used to ride a mule back in the mountains as a young lawman on the hunt for moonshine stills, etc. He said it was the most surefooted and smoothest riding and much better in the mountains than a horse.

I love mules.   One of my main goals in life is to someday have a pair for a team or a single for a rider....then learn how to ride.... :rotfl

I have hunted many a mile from the back of a mule. They are wonderful animals with the correct mix of hard headedness, grit and intelligence.

Not to be a Debby Downer, wait on second thought, I love popping kids balloons and kicking puppies.  >:D Guys that cat was already dead.  No healthy mountain lion is going to be taken down by a mule.

OK, whatever you say.   :hmm    I will point out though that in the picture where the mule has the cat by what appears to be the tail that cat definitely looks alive.  Unless rigor mortis had already set in there is no way a dead cat would assume that position - especially with the claws outstretched and snarling.  I'm not saying its impossible but I've seen a couple of dead mountain lions and none of them ever looked anything like that picture.

If you run that mountain lion long enough and hard enough with the hounds. You can kill the thing with a stick.

Once any cat runs out of steam it is pretty much defenseless. I just assumed the mule jumped on the cat after it was already gassed out, or even after it had been stretched by the hounds/shot by people.

I also didn't rule out a sheer luck kick stopping the cat near instantly. Mountain lions are pretty thinly boned, and are quite easy to damage. IF you can land a hit. They are just damn good at not letting themselves get hit.
