going deer hunting today...finally!
« on: October 17, 2012, 09:04:18 am »
This is more of a "statement" post versus a "question" post mainly because I'm pretty psyched.  I haven't been in the woods hunting deer in about 8 years because of my injuries at the time and now because of my disabilities there are access issues so I haven't gone because I couldn't even get where I needed to go.  Well this past spring I attended a Freedom Alliance turkey hunt sponsored by a hunting club and I was the wounded warrior chosen for a free 1 year membership.  I have access to hunt on 5 farms with 1 area specifically for Freedom Alliance and disabled veterans.

I'm heading out as soon as my daughter comes home from pre-school for the 2 hour drive to the lodge and spend 2 days hunting the first full week of the eastern NC firearm season.  Since I don't/can't work I am able to hunt mid-week while others are jobbing so I should have the place to myself.  I'm hoping to at least see something big since most deer on NC game lands are the size of large dogs...a big change since hunting good sized Connecticut deer before my military days.

I've verified my rifle's zero with my custom loaded hunting ammo (I did up a box of Barnes 168gr. TSX, a box of 155gr. Hornady SST and Remington 165gr. Accutip for rifle and Speer 240gr. Gold Dot & Nosler 240gr. SJHP) for my custom Rem700 build...which is a bit heavy to be hunting with but I'll be in a stand so I don't have to worry about blowing out my back and/or shoulder carrying it around.  I also recently picked up a sweeeeeeet Dan Wesson 44 Magnum revolver that came with 2 barrels, a 6" full lugged and ported barrel and an 8" short lugged barrel with a mounted Burris 4x pistol scope.

Anyway I've been rambling long enough, mainly because I'm excited, but I would appreciate any good luck wishes coming my way.

Well, I don't have much to report after 2 1/2 days of solid hunting.  The weather was great, maybe a bit too warm during the day for the deer to be moving.  I did see 3 does on the 2nd evening coming out of a wood line to a tobacco field.  I had my .308 with me and I felt confident about making the 300 yard shot but I thought they looked on the small side to be worth the work of dressing and trying to get some decent meat butchering one.

I did find that my .308 was too heavy for me, even just sitting in a tree stand.  I thought that I was going to drop my drag line when pulling the rifle 20' up to the stand.  NC relaxed their big game requirements for firearms and now it's legal to hunt with a .223 so I'm going to be using my CZ 527 Carbine from now on.  I carried my Dan Wesson .44 Magnum with the 6" barrel & full lugged shroud in 1 stand and during a short scouting trip where I jumped a deer in some really thick brush.  I only saw a white flash so I don't know if it was a buck or a doe or even how big it was.

I'm planning on going back sometime next week for at least 1 night and maybe I'll reconsider shooting a smaller doe considering that in NC I can shoot 6 deer per season so maybe I shouldn't be so picky...as long as it doesn't have any spots.  For bucks I can only shoot one if it's 6 points or better according to the hunting club rules.  Hopefully next time I'll have something to show for my efforts.
