Gnats
« on: April 08, 2010, 10:22:58 am »
Last weekend I was outdoors all day Sat/Sun at a herding trial (SE Texas).  The weather was nice once the fog burned off but the gnats were swarming (do they do that?  I've never experienced a gnat invasion such as this).  After the pain of the sunburn wore off, I have discovered horrible itchy welts.   They feel a lot like chigger bites, but are only around my neck and arms where the gnats were the most troublesome.

Do gnats actually bite, or could an unknown pest also been lurking about?  If this were in Houston I'd blame it on mosquitoes, but I have never seen a mosquito at this location in 5 years.

Any thoughts?

     They bite....BAD...

I haven't ever been bitten by one though.  :hmm  I must taste bad.

That said, they swarm around here.  They're pretty tough on mom.  And the new neighbors were mauled so bad, one kid actually had a reaction to all the bites.

I didn't notice the bites so much when the sunburn was still fresh, but now without the sunburn to stop the scratching, it's madness.  These are every bit as bad as chigger bites.

Add gnats to the list of insects that will cause me to change outdoor plans, mosquitoes being #1.

When I lived in Maine, vitamin B and DEET were close personal friends.  Take enough B complex and the biting insects seem less interested in biting.

I've heard a lot of the old timers around here call gnats (and other small biting creatures) "noseeums", since unlike mosquitoes the first indication that they are around is them biting into you.

I'm lucky in that when bugs bite I almost never become inflamed or irritated.  Mosquitoes and gnats can eat all day and while it might hurt when they bite I won't have any lasting reminders of the encounter (except for maybe West Nile   ;) ).

The weals are infected spots, so be sure to wash them well with a mild soap to lessen the itch.

Yeah, I A:WAYS keep deet and sunscreen in my outdoors gear, because I forgot them, once.

Actually I keep 'Off' in the car (along with all the other dog crap that is necessary), just never used it.  I didn't realize they were biting me.  Sunscreen on the other hand, I did not have.  Anyone ever had their ears peel?  Ewww.  2 weeks or so and the welts are just now going away.  I've since moved on to mosquito bites from taking the dogs out.

    I really need to move.
