Talk me out of it!
« on: January 29, 2014, 07:43:23 pm »
I'm heavily leaning to spending some tax return on a new Beretta M9. I wish someone would talk me out of it. I had a real beat up 92fs a few years ago that I sold to a guy for him to rebuild and refinish it with the plan I'd buy a new one later.
I contemplated a new 92A1 till I realized there aren't a lot of holsters made for them yet and the typical 'new item' jitters. So now I'm really debating one. Leaning to the M9 (Beretta's civilian M9), but the 92a1 is interesting. Or not get one at all. HELP (and by help I mean push me over the edge so I can quit holding myself back).

I ain't talking you out of a Beretta 92.   I do say get a used one, most ar elightly used, just as good and $150 cheaper.

I love my Beretta, super accurate, super low recoil and the second-last handgun I'd sell.

It is against my religion to talk someone out of a Beretta.  Glocks, SIGs, Smiths, maybe.  Never a Beretta.

Don't worry about any bugs in a 92A1 or M9A1 for that matter.  It's the same basic mechanism that's been working just fine since 1976, with the addition of a locking block with contoured corners so as to avoid the kind of stress fractures that the SEALs and their Proof Loads and suppressors caused, resulting in slide separation.  Which, I'm NOT sorry to say, means that you can run a can with +P+ 9mm through it to your heart's content.

    You're welcome.

I have an M9a1 compact. There are holsters around for the A1, but you don't have nearly as many options. Unless you actually plan on mounting a light, I would go for the standard frame version.

I've been comparing the M9 vs the 92a1 vs the M9a1 and I have to say the more I think on it $565 for a M9A1 is too tempting.

I'll talk you out of a Beretta.

The M9, 92fs etc are some of the most overrated and ugly handguns in existence.

A friend of mine, and my BIL both had one.  I've shot them, I was not impressed.

It's fairly heavy and bulky for a 9mm. There's a lot of better options.  M&P for example.  Or if you want something older and less plastic there's the BHP.

What's another strike against the M9?  It replaced the most holy, an good looking handgun, ever to be fielded by any military. The 1911.

Talk you out of a Beretta? Sure. Well it's got... uh... it has... uh... it's worse than... ah...

    Sorry, can't do it.

I don't get the obsession with 1911s. Their cool and all but no gun I've ever encountered is as temperamental. In 1911 and 42 and 67 it was the best of limited options but I don't think that makes it the holy grail it's always painted as. Good gun but there are better more reliable more controllable guns in 45 out there. Ie sig p220

Obsession? lots of reasons. Trigger being one of them. As good as a 220 is, not all of us are Ernest Langdon.

But I'll never talk anyone out of anything. Because I pretty much like everything. Even Glocks.

Oof! Never thought I'd actually ever type that.

I was very anti glock for a long time and now that what I carry most and shoot best.
The one gun I do want to add eventually though is a Kimber TLE II. Not ready to go $1000+ on a gun yet.

If you want it, get it, I had a chance to buy a gently used 92 for the cost of a new Glock at LE price. I passed. I just really, really, really don't like the ergos. Or the DA/SA.

The gun does nothing for me. But it's not a bad weapon.

The 92A1 may be the best pistol Beretta has made (next to the 90-TWO) but Beretta decided to make that one different from the other 90 series pistols to the point that few holsters are available for it.  It's different - for no real reason.  Which is frustrating to me.  Because a good holster is a critical component to the pistol as a weapon system.  So for that reason, I'd have to suggest the M9A1, which has more options for good holsters.  But really, do you actually need the frame rail?  If not, just go with the classic 92FS.  You can't go wrong with that.

One more thing... Once you get your Beretta... Do the D-Spring replacement.  That's a whole lot of trigger improvement for very little effort.

+1 on the D spring.... Friend of mine who works at Beretta in MD squared me away from one of those and the all metal trigger parts as well as a stainless guide rod.... my d ream would be to find a G model myself

I wouldn't consider owning a Beretta without installing the D-spring immediately. I find it kinda irksome that they don't just already have them already. Beretta DA is horrible to me. D-spring makes a night and day difference.

If you can't find a D spring off the bat, folks have made do with 1911 mainsprings.  Though, I've just noticed that this might increase wear and tear.

    Wolff has parts too: http://www.gunsprings.com/Semi-Auto%20Pistols/BERETTA/92,%2096,%20AND%20CENTURION/cID1/mID2/dID36

I typed that it's horrible "to me". But it's still a point of contention to others otherwise talk of Beretta 92's and the D-spring wouldn't go hand-in-hand as it almost always does.

It's funny that you bring this topic up.  Last weekend I went to a gun show and picked up a 1989 Beretta 92FS in near mint condition, in the box, with original paperwork, two factory magazines, and two very nice holsters for a very reasonable price.  Just couldn't pass it up.  I can't wait to shoot it this weekend.

I'm not saying you should use an M1A for home defense, but I'm also not saying you shouldn't.
