SIG 227 to be unveiled at SHOT
« on: November 13, 2012, 01:20:17 PM »
http://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2012/11/13/sig-p227-double-stacked-coming/

10 round .45 mags in a grip like the 226. 14 round extended mags available for spares.

I hope someone makes a +2 floor plate for it down the road.

Of course some will say “Only 10 rounds?”. And I say “Only?” Sure I got a .45 that holds 14 with a flush fit mag and one that holds 16. But I still have an M&P .45 on the list as well as a CZ 97B. SIG apparently went for a + capacity .45 ACP that fits more hands than to put out a full fat body .45

I think I will be adding this 227 to the list. Who knows if I’ll get around to actually getting one. But I like it sight unseen.

But 10mm is so pricey. Would it really be worth it?

Obligatory old fuddy dud post.  My P220 is good enough for me, why should I shell out the $$$ for 2 extra rounds, yada, yada,  if I wanted that, I'd just buy a Glock. . . .

I agree.  As a person with smaller hands, I fail to see a real benefit of two extra rounds, when the trade-off is a double-stack grip.  I'm not sure how they plan to duplicate the P226's grip, when the OAL of a .45 round is longer than a P226 magwell...  If it has to be elongated, then I probably won't be able to handle it easily...  As it stands, a P226/ P228/ P229 with standard grips is about my 'max.'

The magazines are narrower than say an XD or Para Ordnance mag that holds 13 or more. That's why they only hold 10. If it were fatter to accomodate those other mags then you would have a significantly larger grip circumfrence. If 226 is already borderline for you then you wouldn't be able to grip a true fat mag 220.

I realize this, that's why I mentioned that if they stretched the frame, and then made it as thick as a P226... I would not be able to use it.

Okay... I could use it, but it would not be comfortable.

Yeah, this is why the D-stack .45's work best in poly-framed guns. No grip panels or whatnot to add bulk. And as much as I love my hi cap .45's they don't feel as good as wrapping my mitts around an M&P .45

That's the trade off. More rounds flush? Fits fewer hands. Fewer rounds flush? Fits majority of hands.

Okay, "more hands".

We'll see....I ain't getting too excited for new products...last years 224 still isn't out yet,.....

I'd be interested in a 227 assuming it didn't have a freaking railed frame...

The 2 rounds would be worth it to me, especially since I find the stock 220 grip just too narrow, got Hogue oversized on right now.

Oh, and if it came in 10MM  :cool

I won't likely buy one but I'll definitely be getting my paws on it when it comes out. I don't have giant mitts, but I do like a nice fat grip that fills my hand. I have MIAD grips on my ARs because the interchangeable backstraps let me get them really fat. My STI 2011 fits me like a glove. P226 Elite feels great. P228 with the E2 grips feels slightly small. A fat grip ensures I can't get a knuckle around the trigger, so it forces proper trigger finger placement.

I am unafraid of size  :cool given that the Glock 20 fits me pretty well.  I'm not buying it sight unseen but like Outbreak said - I'll put hands on ASAP and MAYBE - Just maybe it'll be mine.

I am intrigued by how they did this as well - they also said it'll fit existing 226R holsters which has me puzzled.

Well the P220 and P226 have the same overall dimensions according to Sig.

I'm going to take a good hard look at this P227 at SHOT.  This is very interesting... if they can pull it off.  If they can get the Grip to feel anything like the HK45, this is going to be a freaking Home Run.

Regarding the 10mm... Like I've said before, the problem with the 10mm is that the only Serious Use pistol on the market is the Glock, and not everyone like the feel of the full sized Glocks or the Compact Glock because of that rather thick grip frame.     I already have a line on another one myself... because I do dig it.   But for 10mm to get any traction their needs to be some other options.
SIG does some in the P22X series... an XDM, an M&P 10, a Beretta Storm 10... You would see a huge surge of popularity.
Right now you have, what?  High priced 1911's, sketchy EAA guns... and the Glock.  I'm surprised 10mm hasn't gone the way of the .218 Bee or the .40 Action Express or the .451 Detonics.
A SIG P227 in 10mm would ROCK the Gun Industry... because I believe - I really do - that people want the 10mm.

Jim Jones had the best idea... a SIG C3 in 10mm.  OMG... I would be all over that in a heartbeat.  I get twitterpatted just thinking about that.

It shouldn't be that hard, should it? All those brands you mentioned make a .45 pistol, right? And they all make a .40, right? So take the .40 slide, stick it on a .45 frame, and "stroke" a .40 barrel to make a 10mm chamber. Voila!

Mags? I know 10mm will feed just fine out of Wilson Combat .45 mags into my Javelina, so the .45 mags should work fine.

Am I missing something significant?

You're not. At least, not as far as I can see.

Anyone own a M&P45 and a M&P40 and want to swap top ends and see if that works? I doubt highly that the 40 top end will ride on the 45 bottom end's rails, but if it did ...

Basically, you'd have to forge a new slide, essentially a .45ACP slide with a .40S&W breechface and then drop in a 10mm barrel and appropriately sprung recoil assembly. Someone should do this. Seriously.

SERIOUSLY.

Apex ... I'm looking at you.

Yup. Dan Wesson dropped theirs at one point because everyone said they'd buy it, but nobody did.

Back on topic. A mid-size 10 round Sig? It will take a lot to pull me away from carrying a 1911. The XD Compact and Glock 30 couldn't do it*. But this might.

Maybe. You might have to profile the ejection port. Or it may not work at all. Probably moot, since I highly doubt the slide will work on the frame.

What is frustrating is that the 10mm round aaaaaaalmost fits in the 40/357 magazine. Soooooooo close.

Making a 10mm is so easy, you have to wonder why not.  You design a single casting/forging each for the slide and frame the has enough meat on it to be finished machined either way.  It adds a dollar or two to the cost of each .45, but if the 10mm doesn't sell you modifiy the tooling spec slightly the next time it is replaced and eliminate the waste.

SIG needed a high cap .45.  They are giving up too many sales without one.  Whether or not this is the one remains to be seen.

I got a chance to handle a GreyGuns Sig 220 10mm.  Was incredible.  Not $2600 incredible buylt still awesome.  Knowing Grey guns has no problems with batches of 10mm conversions I hope they are listening.
