New Gun!
« on: February 26, 2013, 01:46:19 am »
I utilized my companies gun loan program and am now the proud owner of a Smith and Wesson M&P 9 Pro.

It's nice.

I haven't shot it yet, but I'll give you my first impressions. It fits very well, the top of the grip feels super skinny compared to my Sig. The medium backstrap fits my hand very well, and the small backstrap fits my wife's hand perfectly, which means she might actually come shoot with me and enjoy it!

Now, I've heard a lot about the M&P trigger, how it is gritty and doesn't have an audible reset like a glock.

Well, maybe it's because this is the Pro model, but I like the way the trigger feels. It is a little gritty in the take-up, but then you feel where the transfer bar touches the sear, and it's a Single action trigger. Very nice crisp POP. Pretty light too, comparable with my Sig's single action. There still isn't an audible reset, but to reset the trigger, just relax your finger and as soon as you perceive any forward motion in the trigger, it's reset.

I think the reset is a little shorter than my Sig.

So it's a single action trigger, with some grit while taking out the slack. I don't think anyone would notice the grit while shooting rapid fire.

It has night sights that do indeed glow in the dark. I don't know if they are installed correctly, as I haven't shot it yet.

The idea behind this was to get a high capacity bullet hose to carry at work, and something that my wife would enjoy shooting. Unless it's just horrendously painful to shoot, I think we'll like it.

It's too late for pictures now, but I'll try to get some posted soon, as well as a range report when it happens.

Did I mention that it fits my wife's hands?  :D

The triggers on the newer guns supposedly have a better reset, a la the Shield. The M&P also has one of the most easily tweakable triggers out there. Yes, they come kinda messy from the factory now. My duty gun was always pretty decent, but we were early adopters, and ones I've seen recently are kinda a gritty, slacky, mushy mess. Between Burwell's tutorial and Apex's parts, you make them VERY nice indeed. If you want a more positive reset, you supposedly only have to put a slight bend in the trigger bar, which will make it flex and assist the trigger reset spring to give it a bit more of a tactile snap back. I've not tried that yet, but it's a pretty well documented trigger tweak.

I would work over an M&P's trigger to be a little smoother, have a better reset, and have less overtravel. All of this is very do-able by the owner, with no aftermarket parts. Pull weight is usually not an issue, at least for a combat gun. Competition shooters might want it lighter, but that's achievable, too.

Congrats, now go shoot something with it! M&P's are great guns IMO.

Maybe I've been lucky, or just not worried enough about it, but I actually don't mind the trigger on my M&P. It's certainly not the best factory trigger around but I don't think it's near as bad as some make it out.

just a heads up the Pro series occasionally had issues in the last few years with a few of them not resetting the striker properly - if you observe that it does it IMMEDIATELY contact S&W for them to replace it because it will only get worse over time.  There was a huge discussion over on another board (sorry I forget which one) about it.  The M&P Pro's are awesome and as Coronach said its easily tweakable, but a small percentage DO have problems that don't get better.

I like the job. It is much more interesting than being tied to a computer, answering phones. So far I've just been driving around a messenger, but finessing those big C-body trucks around is kind of a fun challenge.

When I talk about how the top feels super skinny compared to the Sig, this is what I mean.

And a little comparison. I'm not sure that one feels better in my hand. They both feel good, but different.

In my opinion, the M&P line is an ergonomic wonder.

Glad to hear you are liking it so far. What amazes me is just how sharp a big C Body will turn. That makes it easier than one would think at first.

Loading the trucks in the morning reminds of big, expensive, sort of dangerous tetris. It's fun.

LOL that is funny. I never thought of it that was since I tend to load mine up the same every day.

The way I like to do it is I first load the pennies. I line them up at the back wall upright right next to the door and run a row back the the wheel well. I will keep running rows of those towards the edges of the truck untill I am out of pennies. I will put the loomis pennies on one side of the truck and the brinks ones on the other. Then I put the dimes on the far side of the pennies in a similer fashion. The pennies and dimes I stand up on their ends usually. Then I will run a row of nickles next to the pennies just in side the opening of the door, again from the door back. Again loomis coin on one side brinks on the other. The nickles and quarters I usually lay flat. Last I put the quarters in the space left in the middle of the door opening. On my truck it works out to about 3 rows of pennies on each side and a row of dimes past that. In the middle you have a row of nickles on each side and three rows of brinks quarters and 3 rows of loomis quarters in the middle, on a typical day.

My reasoning for this is it puts the quarters and nickles nice and close when you open the door so you don't have to reach far for the heavy stuff. You for the most part don't even have to lift it when unloading, just grab it and slide it out the door onto the handtruck.  Reaching over and lifting out the pennies is easier so that is why I have them in the corners, the dimes even further back since they are lighter still. On my route it tends to leave me a gap between the dimes and the out side walls for throwing the bags of coin I pick and, leaves them where they are out of the way. As the day goes on I scoot everything towards the middle leaving my more room in the corners to throw the coin I picked up. Sometimes the weight of the coin bags I pick up does that job for me. This system works very well on my route 9 times out of ten if not more. Every once in a while I will get an odd day where I have to tweak how I do it but, for the most part it works like a charm.

I don't know how your route is, it may or may not work out for you.

    Hope this helps though.

I interviewed Scott Folk from Apex Tactical for the podcast releasing Monday and we get into detail on why the "Ghost Reset" happens and what can be done to fix it.

BTW, Nice gun.  I'm trying to get a CORE for the red dot project.

I don't mind the reset how it is, (haven't yet shot it, though) I'll just have to get used to it, which shouldn't be too hard.

Fired the M&P tonight. It's pretty good. Point of impact is right in the middle of the front sight. Recoil isn't noticeably different than my Sig, and the trigger reset seems to be shorter than the Sig.

I still shoot the Sig better, but I need more practice with both guns anyway.

To clarify, the video is of my lovely wife shooting. She said she loves the grip on the gun, and she is a good shot with it.
