My Glock bores me.
« on: August 18, 2014, 08:23:06 pm »

I know my Glock 23.  I trust my Glock 23.  I’ve put thousands and thousands of rounds through my Glock 23.  I’m pretty dang accurate with my Glock 23.  It really and truly is the optimum balance of Size, Weight, and Firepower in a package that makes it the ultimate Jack of All Trades.

I have invested more time and money and effort into tweaking this Glock 23 to as close to “Perfection” as possible.  I’ve tried tons of different trigger groups and combos in this thing… The best combo I have found, is the SKIMMER TRIGGER from GlockTriggers with the 3.5 Disconnect and 8 pound spring from Lone Wolf.  This combo gives me the best Carry trigger pull short of a straight up Competition trigger.  Warren straight 8 style night sights.  This gun is fantastic.

But it’s lacking… something.

I would trade it for a Commander sized 1911 from Springfield in a heartbeat.    But why?   The Glock lacks Soul.  Character.  It is a shooting appliance with as much soul as a Whirlpool Washing Machine.   Sure, it’s reliable and does just what is expected every time… but it just doesn’t…. Hmmm… I can’t put it into words.   Let’s try it this way.

You know how you have a motorcycle or car you like, and you park it and start walking away… you turn and look at it.  Because you like to look at it.   The Glock, I don’t like looking at it.   I don’t like holding it.   I don’t get that vibe that my other handguns gives me… My 1911, my Beretta – Pretty much those guns give me great satisfaction just holding them and looking at them.   The Glock doesn’t do that for me.  It bores me.  If this was a marriage, I’d be cheating on the Glock, because there is no LOVE there.

That thing about Glock Reliability?  That’s true.  That gun has never jammed on me.  You know what?  My other guns have never jammed on me either.  So how’s that for reliability?  Does reliability get any more reliable than that?   Maybe… but I’ve yet to experience it in my 4 decades of shooting.

Tell ya what.  If there is someone in North Carolina with a Springfield Armory Champion 1911 that would like to trade for a Glock 23, let me know…

Colt custom shop royal blue, IIRC.

And yeah. I own a few Glocks. The only one that has any sense of character is the 20. Pretty sure that's the 10mm talking.

That said, if I had to go forth into TEOTWAWKI with a pallet of ammo and a NIB hangun that I had no opportunity to test or tweak, a Glock in 9mm would be at the absolute top of my list.

In some situations you want character. Sometimes you just want to know it will work.

I love Glocks, I really do. In fact, a Glock is probably better than my Px4. But a Glock just isn't sexy.

Yep. I like my M&P, but I have a hankering to build a 1911 in. 45 Super on a commander frame.

Well said, GeorgeHill. The line about Glocks having no soul is spot on. Does that mean they don't have their place, heck no. I don't know a Glock guy personally that does not do a bunch of work to them, starting with the stippling of the grip like the one you have pictured. Pieces parts and this and that internals. Bottom line, it is still a Glock. Not knocking them, but just another tool like the many screwdrivers in my box that have the same soulless feeling. Does that screwdriver work everytime? Yes, that is why I keep it.

As far as the 1911's. Sure you can change internals that nobody sees but you can also do some face changing. Go from factory grips.

To some customs, and it looks like a totally different gun.

so,  your looking to pick up yet another safe queen ?

bah,  I've got those, they don't get carried.   rather like the fancy car or motorcycle that stays in the garage cause I'm using the Chevy work truck all the time.

First off that is a hell of a 1911, I'd love to own it, the bluing is just awesome;) Unfortunately if I owned it I'd be afraid to carry it, which puts me in a situation since I carry anything I own... Hmm;)

That said on topic, I feel much the same way I own poly guns that are tools and 1911's that are still tools and even though they are used and abused they are more to my style and taste. So I say get what you enjoy and want to shoot and carry if that's a 1911 so be it. I know you may not be in the situation to but you could always keep both and have your cake and eat it too;) That said if you do switch to a 1911, there is no reason you can't buy another Glock down the road that will be a clone of your existing gun, with no emotional attachment it's an easy solution, get a 1911 you'll love and down the road pick up another Glock you'll like;)
