For the Revolver guys...
« on: December 29, 2016, 07:01:32 pm »
Apparently Colt is releasing revolvers again...

Steel frame Colt Cobra. With a supposed MSRP of $699 it's in the ballpark and I'll probably pick one up.

    Fantastic!  :thumbup2

My turn to nitpick. I really liked the unique look of the unshrouded ejector rod in the detective special. I wouldn't mind them bringing back that look.

ETA: does this mean that revolvers are coming back? Kimber got in the wheelgun game, Smith has introduced new revolver variations, and now colt is bringing 'em back from the grave. What gives?

Economically they probably have a higher profit margin per gun than most semi-auto pistols.  That probably plays into the overall picture for Colt as most Colt fans will pick one up just to have a Colt wheelgun without paying the staggering price commanded by most of the discontinued models. If they bring back the Trooper MkIII I'll be on that one because its essentially a Dan Wesson revolver with a fixed barrel instead of an interchangeable one.  The originals were well known for their flawless operation and accuracy.  Considering a new Dan Wesson revolver is going for something north of $1200 these days, Colt certainly has some room to operate.

Really? I didn't know they shared similarities with Dan Wesson's. I have a trooper Mk III with a six inch barrel and target grips. It's in beautiful condition, but because I can't carry it I've all but thrown it away :hide . I haven't even gotten a chance to shoot it yet :hide :hide.

Merely an academic question, but what barrel length would want yours in?

I was always partial to the six inch barrel in those guns.  Something about the grip frame on them seemed to favor that barrel length for me vs the four inch barrel.   I had a Diamondback in .22 LR that was just stupid accurate but a buddy of mine had a 6" Trooper Mk III in .22 magnum that would shoot with it all day long.  The six inch barrel in those guns made even hot .357's pleasant to shoot.

Forgot to mention that mine is a .357.

Maybe I should shoot it  :hmm. But I can't carry it and the gun is almost too pretty to shoot  :banghead. Colt had beautiful bluing.

Yup.  Back in the day they were gorgeous guns.  A great many of them are just safe queens these days because of the value of the gun.  A shame really because a good, well tuned Colt revolver from the mid twentieth century is going to be a fine shooter.

Probably name recognition. The snake series are more well known than the Detective Special among the masses.

I really hope the name means Colt might bring back the snake series. Especially the Diamondback and Python. I don't really care if they utilize the Trooper MKIII style trigger as it's a good trigger.

Well you also have to look at a lot of the asinine capacity laws and even places like Illinois having concealed carry, a lot of people still utilize revolvers. A lot of people aren't "gun enthusiasts" and like the simplicity of a revolver.

If I was in Colt's marketing department, I would want my new product named after a snake, rather than give it a name that is commonly shortened to 'Dick Special.'

I never knew they used to call the Cobra the dick special. Why?

The Detective Special used to be called the Dick Special because Detectives used to be called Dicks

I don't. At least not for a while. As I understand it, the Snake series (Python, Anaconda, etc) were good because of the people who built them. They were life-long Colt Gunsmiths who had finely crafted their trade and the Snake Series was the result of the pinnacle of the talent pool at Colt. When they discontinued the line, those guys left. That talent pool isn't at Colt anymore. Give them 50 years to build it back up, and I'll be looking for a Snake Gun.

In other words, we need to wait for Colt to be a company that loves to make guns instead of loves to move product out the door.

I'm not sure if any company is still truly passionate about making finely crafted firearms.

new Rifleman magazine came in the mail yesterday,  Colt Cobra on the cover.

My wife walked past the counter, stopped, looked and then said "that's a pretty pistol, I like it".

I like it! It's a little 6 shot revolver (comparable to a j frame, no?). There aren't many of those out there.

I still am saving my pennies for the new Smith & Wesson model 66 2.75 inch barrel, though. I want that thing so bad, it hurts.

    It's a bit bigger than a J-Frame, but smaller than a K-Frame.

And while I don't like fiber-optic sights, that isn't a deal-breaker for me. What is the deal breaker are the numerous reports of light primer strikes I heard coming from SHOT Range Day reports.

I'm with MTK20. I'll save my pennies for the 2.75" Combat Magnum. And that has the additional advantage of not worrying of S&W is going to go bust any day now.
