I carry a Colt defender and absolutely love it.  I have a few thousand rounds through it and can't remember ever having a malfunction. Only a 3" barrel and a bit on the pricy side.   Best 3" 1911 out there in my experience.   I also have a para hawg 9, 3" double stack,  nice pistol but I've only run a couple hundred rounds through it so it's not ready for prime-time yet but  no malfunctions so far.   The mag base plates kind of suck though.

"The laws that forbid the carrying of arms are laws of such a nature. They disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes....Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man."

Thomas Jefferson's "Commonplace Book," 1774-1776, quoting 18th century criminologist Cesare Beccaria in Chapter 40 of "On Crimes and Punishment", 1764

:hmm Hmm, I really like the looks of these. I always thought the age old advice was to avoid both Ruger autos and Taurus revolvers like the plague. Has this changed then?

Do we forget that cops were primarily still using 6 Shot Revolvers well through the mid 80's? It wasn't until after 1986 that most departments then relented and went to autos.
Capacity wasn't really an issue then... and honestly really it's not even an issue now.

Avoid Taurus anything. Not just revolvers

Yes. When the question is 1911, the answer is "yes". ~HVS

Ok, but what of Ruger autos?  :bash.

zero experience. I just know that taurus is the only revolver that I've ever shot that jammed. (rough chambers. you had to beat the cartridges out with a mallet.)

Ruger's centerfire autos are solid reliable pistols, always have been. It's just that the P-series weren't the most elegant and perhaps not as ergonomic as some other brands, but solid, reliable and undeniably durable, yes, without a doubt.

The early P85-89 weren't as accurate as they could have been, Ruger sure made up for it w/ the P90 and P95.

The new SR series got off to a rough start, w/ some trigger problems, but have evolved into an exceptional series of service pistols (I would trade-in my issue M&P for an SR in a NYC minute, if allowed). I especially like the SR9C.

The new American Pistol? I haven't seen one other than in the media, so I can't speak on it.

But the real question at hand is; "What about the SR1911 series?" Well I own one (a TALO Night Watchman, full-size) and can tell you without any reservations what so ever that it is a truly excellent 1911. It did take a bit over 400rds to "break it in" (tight as a spinster's snatch). Once "broken in" it has been perfectly reliable for over 500rds, so much so in fact, that it will feed once-fired empties from the magazine without fail. Try that with most other 1911s and you'll be in for a surprise.

In short...Yes the Ruger SR1911s are excellent. I highly recommend them.

Fantastic! Thanks for the review!  :cool

I am also stealing your spinster line  :rotfl.

Here are my opinions as of today. RO compact is my first favourite, followed closely by the Ruger commander. If I can get it for the right price, a Sig 1911 may either take first or second place.

A quick price check showed the Springfield RO compact as being cheaper compared to the Ruger, which I find very surprising.
