BBQ/Wedding Gun
« on: May 20, 2017, 01:15:20 pm »
OK, not really a wedding, but the Mrs and I have decided that, next summer, for our 15th anniversary, we're going to do a renewal of our vows.

Relatively casual, khakis/polos for me and the groomsmen (aka kiddos #1-4) and sundress for her.

But I figure it's still a good excuse to go for some upgrades to my "pretty" gun.

Here's the start point:

Base Colt Delta Elite, stainless steel, with wood grips.  I'm not one for fancy engraving and such, but here's the upgrades I'm looking at:

-Wilson Bulletproof Grip Safety (stainless)

-replacement trigger. I'm open to suggestions - Wilson, Ed Brown, Nighthawk?

- EGW HW Thumb Safety, stainless

- replacement sights, maybe.  I'm actually generally OK with the stock sights, although the rear sight has lost one of its white dots (darn 10mm recoil!)

That's it for the gun.  For the holster I'm thinking about something in dark maroon tint (burgundy/red wine for you non-Aggies), with "This We'll Defend".  Probably a belt to go with.  I've already got a basic black one from Luke.

Edit to add: I'm liking the Ralph L. take on Luke's Badwater.  That's the color/tint I'm envisioning, except probably a different leather and darker shade on the rear portion of the holster.

Again, I'm not huge on scrollwork and such, but I'm open to some minimalist amount on the belt and/or holster.

I'm open to suggestions, especially on the specific 1911 parts, as long as they're stainless.  (And Joe, you're still in TX, right? And you work on 1911s?)

If it functions well for you why not just replace the defective sight?   A good way to BBQ-ize a stainless gun like the 1911 is to simply polish the flats on the frame and slide.  I agree with the gold bead front sight and one of Luke's holsters is always a plus.  The grips are definitely part of the "package" with that gun but you could have them refinished with a red stain or inlaid with your initials in the double diamonds.

Not trying to talk you out of improving the function of your gun but if appearance is the main motivation it doesn't require different parts IMO.

If you haven't tried a flat faced trigger on a 1911, allow me to recommend them.  The best ones seem to be from either Wilson Combat or 10-8 Precision.  The one in my .38 super was a 10-8 unit and once it was properly adjusted it was superb.

It does function well, although the smooth face on the stock trigger has bugged me since I got it.  I've wanted to replace it with something a bit grippier since I acquired the gun.

As for the other stuff, I'm using this as an excuse to pimp out the gun, something I've wanted to do since I saw this post on VFTP a decade ago: http://booksbikesboomsticks.blogspot.com/2007/04/boomsticks-gratuitous-gun-pr0n-no-41.html

Well, most of the flat faced triggers have vertical grooves so that is one problem solved.   :hmm

Not bad choices all around. I'm going with an EGW safety on one of my projects based on the advice of Don Williams of The Action Works. I ordered one and it's well built and easily contoured for the perfect feel.

I'm kinda weird in that I like a little contrast in my pistols so I usually go with a dark wood on stainless pistols. I'm sure someone can make you a set of grips with that Delta symbol. I saw a good set on a pistol done by Mr. Williams.

If you are thinking about serrations or checkering, Wilson Combat has this out: https://www.midwayusa.com/s?targetLocation=%2F_%2FN-20766%2B4294966944%2B4294949421%3FNf%3Dp_price%257CBTWN%2B1.0%2B40.0%26Np%3D2%26Nr%3DAND%2528p_visible%253A1%252Ccustomertypeid%253A1%2529%26Nrpp%3D24%26Ns%3Dp_metric_sales_velocity%257C1%26Ntpc%3D1%26Ntpr%3D1&userItemsPerPage=48

They work pretty good on my delta.

I will second (third?) the gold front site. I like the Heinie set with them or maybe a 10-8 retro rear and gold front.

As for the leather, Luke does a good Border Stamp that is just fancy enough.
