Would cerakote make suppressors easier to clean?
« on: February 14, 2013, 04:11:29 pm »
I'm thinking about stepping into the Class 3 world with a .22 suppressor, and have read that they can be a PITA to clean. Would having the tube and baffles cerakoted help?

No idea but you should try it, and report back

I expect that vaporized lead and copper will burn through Cerakote near as readily as it does through everything else, but like Outbreak says, you should try it and let us know.

Before you do that you might want to check what warranty comes with your can and exactly what it covers.  Vaporized lead is some pretty nasty stuff and sets up like cement.  Keep in mind when you put a coating on anything you alter the tolerances so if you are treating the inside of the tube and/or the baffles things might not go back together or make it near impossible to take apart.

When I bought my rimfire suppressor I was advised by the manufacturer to buy a small media blast cabinet with glass beads to clean the baffles.  My wife bought me a cabinet from Harbor Freight for around 100.00 and so far it has been used quite a lot and not only on suppressor cleaning duty.

Ah ha! An excuse for a blast cabinet. Excellent idea.

An ultra sonic cleaner should work just as well, without removing metal from the baffle (bead blasting will do that)  Also the utrasonic cleaner will make cleaning your hand guns a dream. I use to have one I used quite a bit, I loved it. If I could find one that would do a whole barreled action for a decent price I'd already have one.

I would think that a hard chrome treatment might be more durable than the cerakote.

Just get one with stainless baffles and use the dip.

Glass beads or even walnut won't damage the aluminum, but something more abrasive will.  Ultrasonic cleaners are awesome for smaller parts (and brass for reloading...I need one for that) but most cleaners are too small for decent sized jobs.  I did have to buy a bigger compressor for my cabinet but the compressor has been getting a lot of use because my other one was just too small for pretty much anything except for bicycle tires.

Stainless baffles are awesome and your can more than well be able to shoot higher pressure calibers but if you are just shooting rimfire then you are defeating the purpose of a rimfire can being very lightweight.  Lead will still fuse to stainless really good but at least you can be more aggressive cleaning it off.

Just get one with stainless baffles and use the dip.

They will handle most suppressors easily, though.

I thought it was a bad idea to ultrasonically clean Aluminum?

Dads old department had them, he left his gun in it ever work day after shooting off his duty loads and when he took his shower before coming home. Thats a couple thousands trips in the bath and no issues.

Depends on the solution you use. My Silencerco .22Sparrow is all aluminum (Gen 1. The Gen 2 has stainless baffles.) and the manual recommends ultrasonic cleaning. The problems are in the solutions. I use M-Pro 7, which is safe for aluminum. If your solution is bad for aluminum, it will be worse in an ultrasonic.
