Oversize 1911 grip bushings
« on: January 16, 2012, 12:51:41 am »
Ok, so I got my Kimber Pro Carry bobtail a while back, and the top bushing on each side of the frame was a tad loose so I unscrewed all 4 and loctited them in, gently snugged the grips on and all has been well. I noticed the threads looked a little shallow but they came up snug with a light touch.  :hmm

While at the range today I was shooting and the right side grip panel came off the gun completely  :facepalm and the left side top bushing is essentially stripped free. So I'm assuming the previous owner really buggered up after the bobtail conversion and overtightened the bushings in the frame enough to damage 3 of the 4 pretty good. My choices are to buy the kit from brownells for $55 and hope it will hold or put that money toward a new Fusion Firearms alloy or Foster industries stainless frame for $220-250.
 :'(

Does anyone have any experience with the oversized tap and bushing set to know if it's even worth trying on the alloy frame? And I am also assuming that the current threads are now entirely gone.

PS: And I just realized this should be in gunsmithing and repair and not handguns, so if a mod could move this for me, I'd appreciate it. I should pay closer attention.  :banghead

    Moved.

I just went through some grip bushing drama myself, although not so far as to have to get oversized bushings.  I came close though.  In my research I was lead to believe that the kit from Brownells is pretty easy to use.

If I were you, I'd get the kit.  If it doesn't work out, you can always go for the new frame.

Thank you for moving my post T, it's midnight here and I am not thinking with the logic centers of my brain.

That is what I will probably do tomorrow morning. I really don't want to replace the frame if I can avoid it. I looked into the oversize kit in passing before but had never had cause to need it until now. All my other 1911's have been steel so I just loctited the bushings in and swapped to allen head screws and went about my merry way.

So, two of the three tapped perfectly fine, while the third was so buggered up the tap barely cut threads at all. Apparently it had been JB Welded in after it had stripped the first time. So now that bushing is still stripped and they don't make oversize-oversize grip screw bushings, so I am either going to have to be creative, or scrap this frame  :banghead

My brother has some very small allen machine screws that dont have a head so I may go back to his house and drill/tap the frame and the alumagrips at the same time and loctite two set screws into the frame/grips for security. And if that still doesn't work I'll have to order a new frame  :'(

    That blows man.

At least it's good to hear the tap kit was successful on the others, for whatever good it did.   :-\

Well if I had looked closer and seen the JB weld in the stripped hole, I may have been able to pass a 1/4 bit through and then firmly run the threads, but when I hit the JB Weld the tap wobbled even in the 2x4 I had drilled out for it to keep it centered. Yeah, pulled the majority of those threads that were starting to tap and made it impossible to tap again.

The good (if you can call it that) part is that I have a set of alumagrips on it that I got cheap from eBay that I can drill and tap to some machine screws. But if I do that I may just do the whole gun and put 4 in each panel for good measure.

I found the tap and 4 bushings on eBay from reddogalaskan for $38 shipped, if you need one later.
