Heyyyyyyy.... that's nice looking...

So, where's the ste-fal?   :hide, j/K, I'd figure that by the little time it took, it would be procrastinating-ly criminal not to do it.

What did you wind up using for solder?

Low-temp silver solder. The front ring never even got too hot to touch.

(Don't worry, I'll wrap up the SteFAL before I really get rolling on this)

So this is a Mauser 98 action. The rifle was purchased by one of the members here, mangled by a "professional" gunsmith in an attempt to mount a scope, given to another member, and then the action was traded off to me in exchange for a bit of ammo - I removed the barrel and returned everything but the action to be sold piecemeal.

It appears that the holes aren't in an area whose strength is absolutely critical to the safe operation of the rifle, but it's ugly as hell and the collectors value was ruined.

I'm thinking of turning it into a .45 ACP carbine with a Rhineland Arms kit.

The holes I'll probably fill by silver soldering in some screws (using heat stop paste to avoid annealing critical parts of the action), grinding them flush, and refinishing the whole thing in Molyresin.

someone butchered the side of the receiver. Your welds should be sufficient for the low pressures of a .45 so that was a perfect receiver for this project.

Wow, I've been wondering what would happen to this thing lately...

All the other parts and stuff, I've since sold off.  I put my revenue to good use and ended up buying "Art of the Dynamic Handgun."  At least I'm more informed on defensive pistol shooting at face value.
