Failure to feed - Norinco 98
« on: January 16, 2012, 10:16:52 pm »
I had to swap out the ejector and ejector spring on my 98. It is parts compatible (mostly) with an 870, so after a batch of fun with Brownells and RMAs, I eventually got the new stuff in and installed.

The problem looks to be that the shell isn't lifting high enough and it will bind if I cycle slowly (I know, don't cycle slowly).

If I press up on the lifter when the shell is stuck, it lifts high enough for the shell to chamber. That only lifts it a little bit.

OK, the obvious answer seems to be that I flubbed the ejector install, but it seems to be even and the rivets are below the level of the ejector. I had to replace the previous ejector because it (not the spring, the ejector itself) had the top rear tab broken off. Right now, I'm thinking that I might have a worn lifter spring, but I'm also thinking that the geometry of the action might just be screwed because the bolt assembly was clearly beating the hell out of the ejector to break it the way it failed. Any ideas?

    You mean extractor, yes?

Looks to me like the extractor is too tight.  Maybe clip a coil or two off the spring?

Nope, definitely the ejector, the bit that rivets to the inside of the receiver in two spots. A bit of the "rail" on the top rear edge of it sheared off and allowed the ejector spring to bind between the bolt assembly and damaged ejector. I had to replace the ejector, ejector spring, and rivets. Yeah, that was a lot of fun.
