AR tooling question
« on: December 06, 2016, 08:40:01 PM »
How much is tooling for broaching things like mag wells on ARs and other such guns in the cost of setup? How much would not needing that change the cost?

Just curious...

I think most AR magwells are cut with wire EDM instead of broaches these days. You can get a used wire EDM for under $10K if you shop around, or it's something that can be contracted out to be done on raw billets or forgings before the rest of the machining operations.

That kind of makes sense.  I wasn't expecting edm, but since a mag well is a bit lower tolerance then most things you use edm for, it can probably run faster.

For a newer shop though, most machines, even lower lower end ones these days can index the tool axis, and it would be one less machine/process at the expense of just a bit of programming time and "special" tooling (and not really that special).
