Ok I'm doing (sometime soon). Going full-kilt......
« on: September 02, 2015, 11:47:42 pm »
Well I'm saying to heck with it......

I'm weird enough already that.....there's really no downside to this.   Although I've no Scottish background, I'm planning on getting a sportkilt at some point in the next month or two and trying it out.

I know there's a few kiltsman around here and was wondering what all types anyone has tried?   I'm avoiding the upper-end ones for now (to see if I actually like them/wear them/have the guts to wear one) and also the....ahm....camouflaged.....ones....

I do plan on getting a Works Kilt with belt loops, etc.    Thinking of getting a Sam-Brown belt to carry a revolver, etc. without weighing the kilt itself down and dropping it around my ankles.

I don't own a kilt, much to my friends' continued consternation (I'm cheap and would never wear the thing!), but a friend of mine works for one of the top kilt-manufacturing companies in the country (or so it's claimed, anyway). I've had a chance to check out their offerings in person, and they definitely offer a very high-quality product line.

While most of their product line is generally very expensive (they use authentic materials imported from the UK and everything is hand-made), they do offer lower-priced kilts made of a polyester blend rather than wool.

Here's the link to their entry-level kilt:

    http://www.usakilts.com/casual-kilt.html

They also offer a full line of "kilt accessories," i.e. belts, sporrans, socks, the traditional dagger that I can neither spell nor correctly pronounce the name of, etc., as well as packages with the kilt and all the basic accessories sold together at a discount.

Whenever I see a person of Scottish ancestry wearing a kilt, I roll my eyes.  Good for them, for being proud of their heritage.  I could see it for formal occasions, maybe weddings...  I still would never do it, myself.

Persons not from Scottish stock?  Heck no.  Wear pants.

Speaking as an Arizonan of Scots-Irish descent, any place with lots of cactus is just not kilt friendly.  That's at the lower elevations.  At the higher ones a few no-see-ums flying up your breezeway and feasting on your nether regions would also qualify as a "wardrobe malfunction" .  .  .  IMHO.   I'm as fond of my Celtic heritage as the next guy but as they say down south, "That dog just won't hunt.".    :scrutiny

Both the Works from sport kilt and the Casual that Raptor linked to from USA Kilts are decent starters for you to see if you want to keep on kiltin'.   Between the two (I own one of each) I'd go with the USA Kilts casual.  It's made from heavier material and has more pleats so it lays better.

While I wouldn't be caught dead in a kilt, I commend you for your "weirdness"  :thumbup1.

Planning (mainly) to implement it into a steampunk costume, and probably also during a couple of our local archery shoots (few locals do kilts for parades and bow shoots).      I ain't ever liked shorts so I doubt it'll be replacing my day-to-day use......although I'd rather be seen in public in a kilt than shorts.

Hey no worries there, I like a good joke as well as the next guy :P    I don't give a crap what people think (thus the reason I'm wearing a kilt in the first place. lol).

Oh, shoot. Now that's a cactus. After some brief searching, I realise how inferior our Texas cacti is compared to what is out there.

I mean look at it, it looks deceifully treacherous. Like its arms are spread out for a hug.

I was looking at utili-kilts, however I think I'll try something cheaper for "find out what I like", plus a "bit" more traditional looking.  Stillwater looks nice.

Exactly.  You don't really get the full diabolical nature of the cholla until you examine the spines under a microscope and see the barbs that prevent extraction from your tender flesh until they break off under the surface of the skin.  At which point they either become infected or tend to migrate in the direction of the point of the spine until they become sodden enough to prevent further movement - and THEN become infected.
