I just got the weekly newsletter from my college and one of the first things they mentioned was who had won the rifle raffle. I can't stand academia, but sometimes this university challenges my more negative stereotypes of what a college campus is

So, Friday was Taser training day. Taser training includes what the training materials call "exposure."

Ouch. Lots of ouch. Longest 5 seconds ever.

Yeah it pretty much sucks...but I'll take it over pepper spray anytime

My youngest sister got a stun gun in her stocking for Christmas. The next youngest brother kept volunteering for her to try it on him

It's funny. People don't mind getting zapped by a stun gun for recreational sport, but yet no one ever volunteers to get pepper sprayed for fun

That fact alone let me know it was better to carry a canister of pepper spray then my little stun gun.

The effects of being zapped by a stun gun tend to wear off somewhat more quickly than a good dose of pepper spray. I've walked through a cloud of my own, after dosing someone that desperately needed it, and was still feeling the effects the next day. Not to mention the UV dye. That's always good for a ribbing from co-workers.

For sure, although, as with everything, it varies from person to person. I got up and walked around as soon as they pulled the Taser probes out of my back. I was sore that day and the next, like I'd done a good session in the weight room. My fellow new hire was still feeling it the following Monday.

OC took 45 minutes to wear off (and from watching the video, I didn't even a solid full face shot - the instructor sent half the spray over my head before adjusting fire) plus the secondary burn when I got home and showered.

OK, pre-training is done. First real shift starts at 1400 tomorrow.

Helpfully, I get almost two weeks on the job before the students come back from Christmas break.

And, as of last night, I'm the officer of record on an arrest. DWLI with priors for same. (DWLI is a Class C Misdemeanor in TX; priors bumps it to Class B.)
