Michael Strickland backpedaled for several minutes while a crowd of BLM protestors converged on him. After they did not comply to his verbal commands he brandished his firearm in fear for his life. No shots fired and no one was injured, yet the DA bumped his two midemeanors that he was being charged with to two felonies.

I need to research this more, but at first glance this looks like a horrible miscarriage of justice  :shocked. Even if he wasn't legally carrying his firearm, I would say that he was using sound and reasonable judgement in thinking that his life was in danger. I mean, we have seen BLM purposefully target and severely maim white people before and this man fits the description of someone they might victimise.

Everyone has the right to self preservation and I am asking myself if a LEO would have unholstered in this same situation, given the size and danger than this threat posed. Somehow I don't think a little can of pepper spray would have benefited Mr. Strickland against a mob.

Do we forget that cops were primarily still using 6 Shot Revolvers well through the mid 80's? It wasn't until after 1986 that most departments then relented and went to autos.
Capacity wasn't really an issue then... and honestly really it's not even an issue now.

It would be interesting to know what felonies Mr. Strickland is charged with.  Also what the applicable statute law is re: this situation in that jurisdiction.  One thing is certain - Mr. Strickland has approximately zero tactical awareness.  He let a person flank him and get close enough to disarm him - actually being touched before he reacted.   :scrutiny   This and his actions after drawing his weapon give me the idea that his training is minimal at best.   He appears to be unwilling to part with his camera gear - even briefly - for any reason.   :shrug   It appears to me that Mr. Strickland went into a potentially dangerous situation woefully unprepared to deal with the possibility of a hostile encounter.  It is something he already has experienced if his friend is to be believed.  It seems to me that his "friend" should have accompanied him and acted as either a cameraman or as an extra pair of eyes and/or a guard in the event it proved necessary.   I guess the video is nice but ultimately not as helpful as someone to watch your back.

I wish him well but if he doesn't learn some "street smarts"  his career as a freelance journalist may very well be a short one.

It's like CCTV in the streets of London in 2011. It didn't save lives, but it helped convict people after the dust had settled.

Ignorant or not, I still feel that his actions weren't unwarranted. One could even argue that a more tactically sound individual would've cleared leather sooner, before the threats closed to engage.

I guess my comments go more to the man's lack of common sense than anything else.  He apparently went into that situation alone and with his hands full of equipment he would not put down even when he feared for his safety.   :doh    There is probably a considerable amount of interaction we are not seeing that preceded the video clip you posted.  Was he there simply to film the proceedings or to interact with and/or interview the participants? Apparently he does a fair amount of this kind of thing so was he known to some or all the rally participants?

We don't know the answer to that AFAIK but anyone who has ever seen any of these types of gatherings has to understand that a white guy, alone, with a video camera is going to be in for his share of "attention" .

There is an old saying:  "Discretion is the better part of valor."   Paraphrased from Shakespeare's King Henry the IV, I believe, but a valid consideration in this instance.   Did he have the right to be where he was doing what he was doing?  Yup.  Do you have the right to stand on top of a hill in during a thunderstorm holding a metal rod up toward the sky?  Yup.   Having the right to do something doesn't necessarily make it a good idea to go do it.

It's never as simple as it looks. I know that there is such a thing as "movie magic", but that doesn't render film completely useless.

I'll have to read the articles you posted later.

I am not taking a position on the subject of guilt or no.  Still, in my experience the first reports are rarely complete and often wrong.  OTOH, I also know that mobs can go from chin-wagging to violence very quickly so I am inclined to cut him some slack.

Ok, we can agree on this. I was pretty impassioned when I saw this video. My first reaction was that- Ok, he's taking a defensive posture. He's asking verbally for compliance, now he realises he has no escape, he's in fear for his life, he drew his gun, and no one got shot..... What? What do you mean he is being charged with two felonies? If George Zimmerman could get off with the seedy situation that he placed himself in, then this guy certainly appears innocent. In this instance Mr. Strickland is shown trying to disengage and evade the threat, while Zimmerman followed the threat (which caused him to be assaulted and almost lose his life).

Playing devil's advocate, we know how reporters can get. Maybe he was being an invasive and prying dick? Still, I guarantee you that because he supports the 2nd amendment or at the very least, his own self preservation, they are going to give him a much rougher treatment than, say, if an MSNBC reporter were in the same situation.

At first blush though, I am also inclined to cut him some slack. I do still feel bad for him and I hope he gets a fair shake in court. After all: impassioned young men cry out for justice, while the wise and old cry out for mercy.

He's a White legal licensed CCW resident of Oregon which makes him an enemy of the system. They don't like whitey being defiant and patriotic, especially in liberal Portland.

Unlawful use of a weapon??? How was it unlawful to defend yourself by showing you are armed (albeit by direct aiming)?
Menacing is possibly applicable here, but the felonies are pure BS.

The real and ulterior motive imo is they want to strip him of his gun rights and leave him defenseless.

For all that I did warn him online about a year and a half ago to be careful and not become a target.
