This is still very early on in a developing situation, but in light of the two Canadian soldier that were victims of a deliberate hit and run yesterday (one of them has died in the hospital) https://ca.news.yahoo.com/martin-couture-rouleau-195209427.html these two events could be the start of something bigger.........

Here's a link w/ pics:

Fox is reporting that after several shots fired, the shooter has been neutralized and the area is being swept for additional shooters....I'm sure that the details will become clearer as the day goes on.

Purportedly, there are 2-3 "gunmen" on parliament's roof that police are closing in on, no shots yet fired at, nor by the roof "gunmen"....I'm inclined to think the "gunmen" are also police that are part of the sweep, such confusion is normal in these incidents.

Even though we are expecting an attack - it is always shocking when it happens. Honestly, I didn't expect that it would happen in the Great White North, eh?

As I mentioned earlier, it appears that there were no more gunmen, just the chaos and confusion which is a part of these events. It's looking to be a "Lone Rat Attack".

This is far from the last of these sorts of attacks that we will see.

CSIS and the RCMP have been quietly indicating for several years that they have been tracking extremists in country and abroad for many years.  It's an issue that has finally been making front page news since it started being reported that several radicalized youths from Calgary had been killed fighting in Syria.  For a long time though, examples such as the Khadr family and the Toronto 18 were portrayed as singularities in the media, anomalies in a multicultural society.

I am frankly not surprised to find that the suspects in both incidents have Quebecois sounding surnames.  It's worth noting that the FLQ, Denis Lortie, Gamil Gharbi, Kimveer Gill all came from Quebec, as did the guy that ran over the soldier the other day.  I suspect that we will find that this latest gunman also hails from Quebec.  The province seems to have a history of producing radicals and misanthropes that express themselves violently.

I'd also suggest that the fact the government has recently decided to militarily support anti-ISIS operations overseas has a lot to do with the timing of these attacks.  And again, polls indicate that backing for that decision is lowest in Quebec.

As I said though, I think this will not be the last incident.

Calgary is home to the largest mosque in Canada, and given the number of extremists reported to have come from here and gone abroad to fight for organizations like ISIS, I am greatly concerned - and have been for a long time - about something happening here.

At times like these, I recall arriving at work the morning of September 11, 2001 and among those who were shaken and solemn, hearing cries of exultation from others.  Canada may have embraced a multicultural philosophy, but not all of them have embraced Canada.

I read over the past couple of days, that PM Harper had planned to meet w/ Nobel Peace Prize recipient Malala Yousafzai in Toronto later today to give her honorary Canadian citizenship. It has been mentioned in the media, that the BGs were very much against the meeting and want her dead. I wonder if that factored in as well.

I don't doubt it.  It seems like it would be too much of a coincidence to not to be connected, if only because of timing.

Also, I would expect an announcement from the PMO that the meeting will go forward soon, regardless.

Canada Shooting Hero Identified as Sgt. at Arms Kevin Vickers
Vickers, 58, Is Former Cop Who Lives In Ottawa
    By RHEANA MURRAY

Sgt. at Arms Kevin Vickers is being hailed a hero today for shooting the gunman who ambushed the Parliament building in Ottawa.

Lawmakers confirmed to ABC News that Vickers fired the fatal shot that killed the gunman, who has not been not been identified.

Vickers, 58, is a former police officer who had worked for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police for nearly three decades before he joined Canada's House of Commons as the head of security in 2005. He was appointed Sgt. at Arms the following year.

Vicker's younger brother John Vickers told CBC News that his brother called their mother to say he's safe.

"I just couldn't be prouder of him right now," John said, noting that Kevin has "always been committed to service, people and country."

Vickers, who lives in Ottawa, according to his Facebook profile, also drew praise on social media.

Justice Minister and Attorney General Peter MacKay called Vickers and other security forces "true heroes" and politician Glenn Thibeault called him the "nicest guy you'll ever meet."

Mighty fine police work. Good Job, Sgt. at Arms Kevin Vickers and thank you for your service.

It's starting to look like this guy has the same profile as the previous perpetrator: Islamic convert, from Quebec, recently had his passport seized.

Picture on the BBC has him holding what looks like a lever action rifle, though most have just generically said "long gun.". Any word on what was used?

I believe the picture in question is actually from the shooting at the War Memorial, so yes is seems to be a Lever action, I don't know the caliber....
The above mentioned picture, purportedly, first showed up on an ISIS related Twitter account, then has made it to the public eye. If this is true, who'd have taken the pic and only posted it to the Twitter account? Now that's an odd, interesting question, isn't it?
As for the Sgt at Arms and his weapon, it appears the be a S&W 9mm 5946 TSW. In a video, taken soon after the stopping of the murderer, one can see the Dawson Precicion rail bolted to the dustcover typical of the TSW series, as the SAA is walking around checking doors. The 5946 and 5946TSW have been in RCMP service for quite a while now.

I was watching a Canadian Station online last night. One news reporter said this ''He was seen with a long gun of some sort, maybe about 3 foot long. Obviously an assault rifle''.

Now there's this in from NYC: http://us.cnn.com/video/data/2.0/video/us/2014/10/24/ac-sciutto-new-york-hatchet-attack-surveillance-video.cnn.html

Yeah, I know perhaps this should be a new thread, but what the hell, let's just pile all the "Lone Rat Attack" incidents on this thread so they'll be easier to manage....there will be a wave of them....

I don't THINK I'll ever have to face down routers in the streets.

I should hope not. Mobs of rogue woodworking tools would suck to repel.

I heard on Fox News he used a model 1894 Winchester in caliber .30-30.
