What 3 new products for Ruger
« on: May 13, 2014, 10:12:55 am »
I got an email to take the Ruger "Voice of the customer" survey this week.   Question 4 asked to choose 3 new products for Ruger.  Pick 3, fanboys and h8ters alike.

As for me

1.  New 1911 variant
2.  Lever action rifle (.357)
3.  Pump action shotty

    Took the survey last week.

IIRC, I chose "Ruger LCR-style midsize revolver", "Midsize revolver in .22LR" , and "LCP pistol chambered in .22LR".

My personal choice for Ruger's next product wasn't listed; I'd like to see them make a GP100 in .44 (Special or Magnum) and/or .45 Colt.

    I never got that email.

Mine would be a mini 14 in a different chambering (.458 SOCOM) though out of those options I can see how that choice would be left in the dust.

Pump action shotgun or even semi-auto shotgun is nice. Not going to be easy to do in the land of Remington/Mossberg/Benelli but if someone can pull it off it is Ruger.

Semi-auto .357 and .44 mag rifle caught my eye big time but I'm sure that will get a small percentage of votes as well.

The semi auto .357 and .44 mag seems interesting.  I would like to see what they come up with though.   Not really interested in a tube fed cowboy style gun.   Ideally I would like something mag fed that holds at least 10 rounds with good options for optics.

I think it would be best if they utilized Desert Eagle magazines. Well, okay that would be the easiest route. Best would be they make their own 10 shot .357 and .44 magazines.

Hell, I'd buy one of each!

I would like to see something with a form factor similar to SVD or PSL mags.   That seems to offer the best option balancing capacity with mag length.  The rimmed cases make it hard to go much bigger than 10-15 rounds though.

The .22 magnum pistol choice made me think exactly that.

Yes. Since they apparently like ripping off Kel-Tec (who, through their own incompetence, make it sooooooo easy), they should do a RSG, a RugerFB and PMRuger-30.

How long has the world been salivating about the KSG? Three years? Four? KT has once again created a lucrative market niche that they could own and left it vacant. Oh sure, yes, the KSG exists. Go into a gun store and try to buy one. I've seen exactly one, and it wasn't for sale (it was being taken to a gun show where the owner knew he could get stupid money for it). If Ruger swoops in and eats their lunch yet again, I will not weep for them. Is it wrong? Yes. Is it illegal? Maybe. Is it predictable? Absolutely.

Do you guys recall Ruger's other foray into lever guns?

Short throw fed from a rotary box magazine, could handle 44 special or 44 magnum.  Didn't sell very well at all.

Remarkably similar to winchester's last lever action, the 88

also a short throw fed from a box magazine, available in the 308 family plus 284  (this was before the 7mm-08) also didn't sell very well at all.

I think lever guns sometimes try and be bolt guns, but if someone is looking for the features of a bolt gun they buy a bolt gun.

I think lever action buyers are always going to desire something that looks more 1894ish.  I also think lever action guys like the idea of a 44 magnum lever gun but with more capacity than 4 rounds, 8 is probably the minimum.  After all, the 1894 has been offered in a myrid of variations, including many with 'half magazines'...ie the tube stopped where the handguard wood stopped rather than going all the way to the front of the barrel.  Proponents of the design stated the gun handled better and three in the tube plus one in the chamber was two rounds more than most hunters would ever need.  Still, judging by sales, most people though the opposite.  They'd accept a little bit of weight on the front end to have 6+ rounds.

I think the same thing harmed both Ruger's attempts at 44 mag semiauto carbines.

Yeah, I need at least 8 rounds.  If not 10+.

I can make an exception for certain bolt guns shooting full power rifle cartridges (even then I don't like less than 5),  but if I am shooting a pistol caliber, I want more rounds.

I think Ruger could do well if they took a different starting point for there development of a carbine in 44 magnum or 357 magnum.

Starting point should be 'it would be great to have an M-1 carbine in 44 magnum and/or 357 magnum' and go from there.  Short, light, handy, detachable box magazine of decent capacity offered in a two common rounds.

Rifle in 22 magnum = I think it's just a little time before Ruger comes out with one again.  IIRC they had a 22 mag version of the 10/22 but it had some problems.

compact striker fired 45 = SR45C.  they have "c"ed the SR 9 and SR 40, I can't imagine we'd not see a SR45c in the next year or two regardless of what the survey says.

I think Ruger...or any gun company...does best when they are filling a niche that isn't already filled.  Take what Kel-Tec is doing, it's offering something that has no other real equivalent  (at least not until Ruger copies it).  If Ruger jumps into the standard configuration pump or semi-auto shotgun market they won't be bringing anything new to the table.  Remington, Mossberg, Browning, Ithaca (and I am sure I am forgetting a few) have really got the shotgun market covered.  Unless Ruger is meaning some sort of bullpup combat shotgun, I don't see how it is a smart move for them to jump into the shotgun market (beyond their current presence in the over-under category)
