I'm not huge on Bowie's either, mostly depends on the knife but the things I do with a knife don't really require that blade style. It's not without merit, but it's not super practical for my day to day use of a fixed blade so I guess that's where it comes from.

But all that said I'm pretty happy with most larger knives;) Just Bowie's don't light my fire much, but I'm the same with Tanto's as well for blade style, I own a few and they are fine. But I prefer a drop point or clip point in most cases.

I love to look at at them, but the blade shape is not good for my every day use. I have little use for clip points in general. Love a sheep's foot blade or Wycliffe if you prefer the modern name. Not many in common manufacture as single blade folders, or fixed in what I consider usable lengths.

I hate the fact that all but two or three of my knives are packed in storage.

Well, yes...  Baseball particularly, but also any apple pie that is not spiced properly.  And before you ask, I haven't touched a hot dog in years.

All of the above will be acceptable as long as you haven't gotten sucked into the "modern" tanto craze. It's a strong design and good for stabbing, no one can deny that. But we must face the fact that it is nothing more than a metal triangle and not everyone who is cool or tactical 'needs' one.

Personally I like traditional designs. It doesn't have to be a bowie. A clip point, roach belly, or cleaver shape will do. I sometimes even like wharncliffe blades too.

Having some curve and belly to a blade is all kinds of useful. I imagine trying to skin something or slice vegetables with a straight edged knife would be more than a little tedious.

I never suggested that knives be straight as a pin - I just don't care for Bowie's.

I usually carry multiple blade shapes. I like to start skinning with a drop point or Roach belly, then I go to a straight edge with a dullish point for fur bearers. Easier for me to get hides off with minimal damage to hide and or carcass.

Veg I go back and forth between a cheif's knife and a santoro? not sure which I like better.

No, i never meant to suggest otherwise. I was more addressing Mikee's comment about looking a sheep's foot. They're nice for a few things but much more limited than something with some curve to it.

I like them all.  If its got a point, an edge and someplace to hang on to it, I'll figure out how to use it.  Come to think of it though, I've got an ulu without a point and a custom made pizza cutter with a round blade.  Never mind.   :cool

Watch someone fillet Salmon with an ulu and you realize how useful the shape of those knives can be. Also they are exceptionally good skinning knife with proper technic.

Different knife shapes, and edges require different technics to be effective. No one shape or size or edge grind is going to work "best" for everyone to do everything. That is part of what I love about tools. How does this, thingamajig, work for me? What can I learn from you to make the tool work for me? What jobs does it do better than the tool I am currently using? And what adaptations can I make to work it better?

Gun's, kinves, flashlights, woodworking tools, whatever we all have our own ways of making them effective for US.

This is not mine, I found the pic from an auction site. It's WW2 historical class! Check out the plexi-glass grips w/ personal pic underneath...Kinda like the revolver in "Fury".

from what I understand, keepsake grips were pretty popular. If I wasn't single I might take a nice Black and white of my lady and get a set of those to keep it under.
heck, when I finally convince another lass to deal with my gun and tech addictions I'll see if she won't let me take a few of her to keep on my sidearm.

Sort of adds a whole new dimension of sentimentality to firearms passed down doesn't it?  :hmm

How do you think they made the holes for the screws to go through so clean without shearing the photo? I doubt they had hole punches in various sizes back then.

Could have used a knife without much issue or say 22lr would be around the right size or some other piece of brass around the right size.

Maybe, I didn't think the backing mattered when drilling paper. I though the stuff would tear easy no matter what. Many of you have way more experience in the work shop than I do.

Sharp matters.  No matter what tool you are using - if it has an edge and needs to cut the material its being used on it has to be sharp.  Edge geometry is particularly critical on rotary cutting tools like drill bits.  A good sharp drill bit and proper backing will allow you to drill a clean hole even through fragile material like paper.
