Heads Up
« on: April 05, 2017, 10:44:28 AM »
I don't know if any of us here can afford this - I can't - but here is a once in a decade opportunity to buy a civilian FAMAS, the soon-to-be-replaced service rifle of France:

http://www.gunbroker.com/item/633962991

About 9hrs left, and over $10k.  :o

If you are interested/able to buy, but can't bid just today, note who buys it and watch to see if they try to sell it again.

2-1/2 hours to go, and it's up over $20k.  :scrutiny

I would like to own one 'just because,' but the only reason I could see spending that much is if one was a former legionnaire who just 'had' to have his old rifle.  Other than that?  Forget it.

Ever since I was little, I wanted a Famas really, really badly, now that I'm older I still want one, just not as badly as I used to.

20K ?   Not unless it was capable of taking out light armor and/or aircraft.  A German 88?   OK, that I could see for 20K but not an infantry battle rifle.  Well, maybe Sgt. York's rifle but that's about it.   :coffee

A lever-delayed blowback that uses proprietary mags and can only safely use French-produced steel case ammo?

I wouldn't buy that for a dollar. No way in HELL would I buy it for $20k.

I've heard of these but never seen one. This is the first one i hve seen for sale internet or other wise. It went for a bit over 20,000 that is a heck of a lot for what it is. If there were really only 100 brought in I suppose I can see that price, some collector just had to have it. Over priced if you ask me but, I would be guilty of buying over priced things a few times myself though nothing on that level.

I'm thinking it might be cheaper to just custom machine a US made copy for that price.

Same here.  Which is why I really did light up to see one for sale, even though I knew it would be well outside of my price range.

That is logical, for what you would use it for.  Your AR is a better MSR.

However, from a collector's standpoint, it is a very desirable item.  Very.  I could personally see myself (if I had the means) spending $6-7k, simply because of how rare they are.

If I was a former legionnaire...  Depending upon how fondly I remembered the rifle and my time in service...  I might consider spending $10k.  No more.

If I wanted a useable personal rifle for civilian use...  No more than $2k.  It has 'cool' written all over it, but it would be hard to argue that better rifles are not out there for $2k - or a lot less.

I actually entertained that idea for a time, - opening a shop to do just that - but then I learned about the s___ty operating mechanism, so I canned that idea.

I do view it as a collector's piece rather than an every-day rifle, and my AR fills that role, but that said I hate the idea of "safe queens." I'd want to take it out and shoot it every once in a while. And either way this thing is way too ugly to hang over your fireplace. And since I can't safely shoot the FAMAS by virtue of its merde design rather than because of age or condition, I don't see the point.

Same deal with me wanting a vintage Ferrari Daytona. My Mazda would still be my daily driver, but I'd want to take the Daytona out on the weekend when it's nice and sunny and stretch its legs. I wouldn't buy and then leave it sitting in the garage. Cars are meant to be driven, like guns are meant to be fired.

Can't we already get semi-auto FAMAS here? What makes this one special?  :scrutiny

Forgive me, but I'm not interested (nor the most knowledgeable) in these types of firearms. Hell, you could give me a semi-auto AUG, tell me it was a semi-auto FAMAS, and I'd just be disappointed because it wasn't an AK  :P.

Do we forget that cops were primarily still using 6 Shot Revolvers well through the mid 80's? It wasn't until after 1986 that most departments then relented and went to autos.
Capacity wasn't really an issue then... and honestly really it's not even an issue now.

I haven't shot one, but from what I understand they're not special or even that great. Just fairly uncommon, and somewhat historical. I don't know if this one is "super special" for some reason. 4K will get you the best AR known to man and the optic of your choice, and it'll be better. But, some people gotta have what they gotta have, nothing wrong with that if you've got deep enough pockets for it.

Um... No?  Ever seen one before?  For sale?  They only brought a very few of them into the country, back in the '80s.

No one really wants them as shooters because of their unique operating system - you can not shoot standard 5.56 out of them.  No, their value is only because of their rarity.

Either it was a full auto, and that was taking insurance into account, (which would not be unthinkable) or it was a mis-type of '$30.'  In the latter case, I would definitely get an emailed correction from the seller, before bidding.

It was a semi and from the way it was typed I don't think it was a typo. Wasn't planing on bidding on it they wanted more than I have.
