2016 Election Purchases
« on: October 25, 2016, 04:02:30 pm »
So with the Election just a couple weeks away, what are you buying?  Or what have you bought?  I know there's probably going to be a lot of panic buying of AR type riles and accessories, but what else?  A couple months back I bought a couple of lowers and LPK's.  I've also bought about 10 magazines.  Right now I'm stocking up on primers and powder and projectiles as it was hard to find all 3 during the last election cycle.  And if you did find them, they were considerably higher than before.

So my list to buy includes the following:
  • Powder
  • Primers
  • Bullets
  • Loaded Ammo
  • Magazines
  • LPK's

I figure the other stuff like uppers, barrels, and handguards will be plentiful.

I bought a MSAR bullpup a few months back.  It was not for the election, but for 'me,' but if there is another panic and an opportunity to make a grand presents itself...  Hey, everything is for sale. :cool

I found that the bullpup did not work with my shoulder, so I sold it and bought a Beretta ARX-100.  Once again, this is meant to be my go-to rifle, but...  Anything you can resell for a profit is a good investment.

I did buy some 9mm and 5.56, really the only calibers I shoot in quantity, other than shotshells.  I don't worry about these calibers being banned, I worry about scalpers taking advantage of those who do.

Mags...  I need a few more M9 mags for my Beretta SBR, but since I haven't even submitted the Form4 yet, I figure any panic will be done and blown over by the time I get my approval back.  The ARX-100 shares mags with my AR, so I have plenty for both.

I picked up a 10 pack of hex mags on sale last week.  Been buying primers, powder bullets and lowers as well.

Tell me, what is the appeal/point of buying tons of lowers?  I seem to recall lowers being relatively available four years ago, with the other parts harder to come by.

Basically I'm set in everything....the last 4 years have shown to prepare while the weather is good.

Basically all I'm doing is grabbing a few extra AR magazines, and adding to my already sizable powder, primer stockpile.

I have a couple extra lowers, figure that and mags is what they'll go after if they do.  And I believe imported ammo will be zilched shortly, however I'm setting good on X39 and 54R.....I'd like more Wolf Gold 5.56 but I don't have the cash for it.

Because any legislation will be incremental, and IF....it happens, lowers are firearms already in hand, whereas LPK's,etc. will all eventually come in stock, and likely untracked/recorded,etc.

Not that it matters.....if the powers that be really want to assemble lists just audit a business and see where the uppers and parts are going  ::)

I would like to get an AUG. probably won't happen especially when I want one with a 20" barrel. Other than that one could always use more ammo and mags. Really though I doubt I will be buying much if anything. Perhaps after the election who know what the fall out of that will be.

Yeah...  That logic makes no sense to me.  At all.  For the reason you mention, as well as others.

Bought a Mossberg MMR,  M4 clone, an inexpensive AR type over the weekend.  When I get it ready and assure its function it will be a trunk gun for my vehicle.

Been buying stuff since July.   Kind of sucks since I would have rather spaced these purchases out over a year or two.

3 AR-15 lowers.   Built one with a 16" upper I bought from CBC during their 4th of July sale.  Got all the lower parts bought and installed in the other two, but I'm still looking for uppers on those.   I'm thinking I'll go with a Rock River .458 SOCOM on one,  and I'm still looking for a good 20" upper for the other.   Unfortunately, most places only seem to sell 16" these days.  I'm hoping to catch a PSA special sometime soon.

2 AR-10 lowers.  Finished one with the upper I bought from AIM.   The other I'm doing something special with.  I'm going to build it in 7mm-08 with a 22" barrel and get it cerakoted a nice navy blue.  Got all the parts here or on order except for the barrel,  probably order that next week.

SR9E,  not strictly election related since I was thinking about changing my carry gun for awhile anyway.

M1 Garand,  not strictly election related.   Had to stop at the CMP store when I went to Dragoncon since I was in the area.

Mosin Nagant.   Just happened to see a good price on it at the gun show.

Some magazines and ammo.  Mainly been buying AR-10 magazines since I need those now.  I didn't have a previous stockpile.   I really need to buy more ammo.  I'm not hurting for it,  but you can never have too much.

Same here.  Since July (as well) I have prioritized gun related purchases, to the exclusion and neglect of other areas.  I have been cutting things close, trying to fit at least the next year's worth of purchases into this summer.  Because people are reactionary sheep, and I Refuse to be one of the ones panic buying.  I'd much rather have a bit extra on hand to sell to them.

My AR build has been sort of a long, drawn out election purchase. I bought the stripped lower back in June, slowly acquired the parts to build up the lower, and finally ordered a complete BCM Lightweight Upper with a hammer-forged barrel over the weekend from AIM Surplus. As I acquired parts, I also built up a pretty decent magazine supply.

Between now and the election, I'm going to try and build up my supply of .223 Rem/5.56 NATO. At the moment, I only have a few hundred rounds on hand. And maybe I'll pick up a few more mags as well.

Honestly, it just kinda... happened. I made noise about picking it up for a while, and Mama Raptor gave the OK once I explained that no, I was not building a "Machine Gun," so I went ahead and picked up the lower. I kinda didn't tell Papa Raptor until after I bought it, but he turned out to be cool with it too.

And apologies for the thread derail, but I think Mama Raptor wants a gun. I wish I could say I was thrilled with this development, but the reason I think she wants a gun is because every time there been a terrorist attack, a BLM "protest," a thread of said "protest," or a particularly heinous crime has made the news over the last few months, I would say that I really needed to finish building my rifle, and then more often than not Mama Raptor would say that she was seriously considering buying a gun of her own. And she sounded serious.

While doing anything in reaction is not my favourite way of doing things, one cannot blame her. The terrorist attacks and violent protests are real and I don't think either one are going away anytime soon.

I had two cases of 9mm show up at my door.  If those outside of Utah need ammo, my distributor can drop ship.  Inside Utah, price isn't as great because of Sales Tax.  My case of 9mm Blazer Brass 115gr FMJ came out to about $220 after tax.  I just wish they had more .223/5.56 available but I guess that's why I have brass and projectiles available for reloading.  I've got 5000 pieces of Lake City brass but for some reason it doesn't fee like it's enough, but I know it's enough.  I feel like I need 50k pieces of brass.

I'll be picking up a case of 5.56mm and some more Federal Tru-Ball Slugs.
Only 1 case? Isn't that like an afternoon of shooting?

Yeah...  That logic makes no sense to me.  At all.  For the reason you mention, as well as others.

For me, I'm trying to have the necessary parts on hand that if I have to sell a rifle, I can easily build another one.  Last time LPK's and BCG's were hard to come by.  I've rectified that problem. When a basic AR has a street price of and sells for $1500, sure I'll sell it.  Because I know I can make another one to replace it.  Back in 2014, I saw a custom AR sell for $3200 cash.  Yes it had some fancy parts and billet upper/lower but for $3200, I just could not believe it.  I believe this was right after that shooting in Connecticut.

Another reason to buy lowers is that you can fit more in you gun safe that completely assembled rifles.  You can have the parts laying around somewhere else and people are less likely to steal parts compared to a fully assembled gun.

That's not a bad price for 9mm.   How much does 5.56x45 or 7.62x51 run?

5.56 is mostly out of stock or not worth it.  it's like $10-$18 per box of 20 and I suspect is meant more for hunting ammo rather than general shooting.   7.62 doesn't great pricing either.  One distributor has a box of 500 Federal 149gr for $304 before shipping.  Not a great price in my opinion considering how much you can reload for and how much you can buy it for at gun shows.

Hmm.  I see some Tula 5.56 for $4.27 per box of 20, though I don't care for steel cased ammo.

I think you mean 2013, but yes.  Not to one-up you, but I saw one advertised for an even $4k.  It probably didn't sell, but that's not the point.  It was at a gunshow the second or third Saturday of January, 2013 - the absolute worst of the panic.  After that, prices leveled out but availability tanked.  I was there to pick up my suppressor from the dealer, who was located far away, but attended a show that was close.

Now that you guys made me look, I am seeing some 5.56/.223 priced in the $6-$7 per box of 20 range.

PMC xP193 5.56 ammo for $6.69 - Comes out to $334.50 per case of 1000.

Glad to see there is more out there than I originally thought.

Interesting service from a place here in Kansas.  Basically an ammo subscription where you sign up and they automatically send you a certain amount each month.   You can order anywhere from 50 rounds on up to several cases if you want.  Prices were decent, but they didn't have a lot of variety.  Mainly just FMJ 9mm and 55gr .223.    I'd be tempted to give it a shot, but I'm not sure if they tack on sales tax for in-state purchases.  Also, I tend to prefer 7.62x51, or at least the heavier 62gr and 75gr stuff in .223.
