Woot! Just got my instructor ID#
« on: April 20, 2011, 03:09:30 pm »
Ordered 10 student packs plus the instructors pack with the powerpoint presentation.

And within two hours I already have 12 guaranteed clients. 6 of them from word of mouth alone. Going to create a FB page tonight. Eventually I'm going to teach shotgun, rifle, home defense and refuse to be a victim.

I'm going to try to put all profit in a jar labeled "SHOT 2012"  :devillol

Yeah, that's why I devil lol'd. I'll be lucky to make $40 a student. Probably use the money I make to buy more student packets and more ammo. I hope to at least save up for a reloader. But even then it won't be all from my profit. I've got an actual change jar that when it's full it's roughly $200.  :facepalm

And all of this reminds me that I need to buy some Lucky for Life quick pics. 2k (before taxes) a week for "life". I don't do powerball or jackpot lotto. I'm not greedy. ;)

    Good on ya.   :hat

Me, when I teach, I go for volume, and do it cheap.  I like helping give the CDC aneurisms on government firearm danger studies.

Firearms safety training is the only major safety area not covered by a federal bureaucracy of some sort(pesky Constitution), yet through it's network of mostly volunteer instructors, it is achieving a record to be envied by the likes of OSHA, FAA, NTSB, et al.
This may be considered as the true palladium of liberty. . . . The right of self defence is the first law of nature: in most governments it has been the study of rulers to confine this right within the narrowest limits possible. Wherever standing armies are kept up, and the right of the people to keep and bear arms is, under any colour or pretext whatsoever, prohibited, liberty, if not already annihilated, is on the brink of destruction- St. George Tucker, Blackstone's Commentaries

    Hey, Thanks!!!

I actually don't have a place to do large classes and I live in an apartment. It's pretty spartan since I don't entertain guests. But in a few months I'll set it up so I can teach people from my place. Just two maximum. I will still offer housecalls though for those who prefer learning in their own homes. I'm compiling a list of ranges in my state, their hours of operation and most importantly, which ones allow instructors to train students. Many ranges here offer their own classes and toss people out if they think an independant instructor is training someone.

And that's kind of stupid in my opinion. Sure they might be losing the money on the course but they also risk losing the student who after they get their permit, might not ever go to that range due to the incident. Especially if it's a large store with a range. If I were kicked out with my instructor I wouldn't buy a gun from that place OR use their range. And I would tell others not to go there as well.

Of course I'll avoid all that if I already know. But still. Makes it more difficult logistically to do the shooting part of the course.

For reference, when I took Basic Pistol a couple of years back, there was a range in Bridgeport (yeah, I know, but it's just over the line from Stratford and all the people were friendly) that they used, as their store didn't have a range space.

I'm pretty sure it's Bridgeport Shooting Range, but it's been a while. At a minimum they may allow instructor/student sets with advanced notice.

    Also, congrats  ;D

Yeah, BSR is where I do the majority of my shooting. Yes they still do classes now and the room they do it in looks like it could hold 15 or more people. But I'm only guessing. Couldn't hurt to ask them though if I could use their facilities.

I could also take them to High Rock in Naugatuck but only if the student has an SUV or a pickup truck. I would NOT take a car even with AWD up that road.  :P

I'm still going to need to make that list though. Like if I taught someone and they lived in Vernon (got two prospects that live up there), I'd try to find the range closest to them that would allow independent trainers. Just to save on travel. If I gotta drive farther then I gotta drive farther. Just trying to save me (and the client) some gas money. Especially since I drive a V8.  :devillol

I know what you mean, gas is murder these days.

Glad to hear that BSR still does classes. I did NRA Basic Pistol and then lost my job, so I never got my CCW  :hide , and I'm considering correcting that now that income is starting to... well, come in, so I may poke you for it if I can convince the wife.  ;D

By all means! You can add me on FB (under Andrew Malik) if your on it or just PM me here.

I just remembered that the actual certificates aren't in the student packets. So now that's something else I have to order. Oh well. Only one day apart from yesterday's order. Still it takes like two weeks to arrive.  :banghead

Contests on getting certified. Just for reference, even if you go for awhile without teaching keep your certifications up to date. It is easier to renew an existing certification than starting over.

I have thought about getting my instructor certification for ccw here in Utah. What has stopped me is seeing how many instructors there already are and knowing how little time I have to set up and promote classes. But I stee maintain my NRA credentials, Range Safety Officer, Basic Pistol Instructor, Personel Protection Insructor. I just have to fill out a form and send in a check every few years. I used to have USPSA Range Officer and NCAA Class C Rifle Coach but I let those lapse years ago and it would take some effort to get them again, especially the coaching certification. I was also a ccw instructor when I lived in Arizona, and when I was in WV I was certified ccw and LE instructor.'Didn't keep those after I moved away.

The class for the coaching certification was probably the most valuable class I ever took as an instructor. It was several days long, with almost no discussion of shooting technique. Instead it was mostly about pedagogy, how to observe the student, and how to coach effectively.

The only problem I have with that training background is that whenever I take family or friends shooting it quickly turns into a training session whether they want it or not. I have a hard time shooting just for the fun of it.

Thanks guys! Picking up a Charter .22 this week. No, it's not really what I want but it's cheap and I need a .22 revolver. Being that I have neither a .22 LR or a revolver.  :devillol

I'll be training my first students a week after that. :)
