How Much Does Training Cost?
« on: July 19, 2013, 12:34:13 am »
What's a reasonable rate to pay for one-on-one instruction?
I feel like I've plateaued in my handgun skills. I'm proficient with just about every handgun type, and I'm an NRA Certified Basic Pistol instructor. Some of my students can outshoot me now, which I'm very proud of. But my own skills need work to get to the next level, and I don't think I can improve by myself. I've taken a CHL class with an instructor locally who I am willing to give a chance. I challenged myself (which he liked) by shooting my Kimber Ultra Raptor II for the qual, as well as my SP101 for the revolver portion. I was totally confident with both guns, and chose them (over, say, my 5" Springfield) to avoid boredom in the class. He gave me some pointers, but all the other students were new, or inexperienced shooters, so they took most of his attention.

I guess I'm looking for sort of "Advanced Fundamentals" type of training. I want someone to take my "pretty darn good" shooting and tune out my flaws. I want to be excellent.

What do you guys think I should expect to pay, per hour, for that type of training?

Back in September, I paid $100 for a 1.5 hour 1-on-1 class. The instruction was a personalized course based around whatever the student wanted/needed to learn, from the bare-bones-basics (which was what I needed at the time) to hunting rules, regs, and how-to, to advanced defensive techniques.

Based on that, I figure $60-$75/hour aught to be a good price. Depending, of course, on the quality of the instructor.
