Help me locate a training class to attend
« on: November 20, 2014, 12:00:22 AM »
As a casual shooter who wants to become 'serious,' I have made it my goal to take at least one class a year.  Unfortunately, I did not get one in 2014, mainly because I could not find one in the area.

That can't happen again next year!  I live (nominally) in the Pittsburgh area of Pennsylvania.  How can I find a class within a few hundred miles, taught by someone worth learning from?  For instance, the school taught by James Yeager is probably within the outside limit of my acceptable range...  but no, just no... :facepalm

Someone with a head on their shoulders is a must.

You're about 2 1/2 or 3 hours from Romney WV which is where Max Velocity Tactical is located.  His classes are tactical in nature but there are individual level combat handgun and 2 Gun classes, in addition to the team classes.  I thought the MVT training experience was darned good and would certainly recommend considering it.  (I have a 17 hour drive each way, and am returning there in 2015)  The MVT classes though are certainly 'serious' in presenting good information and a good training progression.

Massad Ayoob's MAG-40 class will be held in August 2015 near Harrisburg PA, also.  MAG-40 absolutely counts as a serious class, too.  (I've taken it twice, the second time I took it with my wife).

I've taken training from both of these trainers and would absolutely recommend both.

Unfortunately, for unrelated reasons, the months of July-September have to be kept free on my schedule.  No way I could sign up for that one, or that would absolutely have been my choice.  :(

Either MAG-40 or MVT is worth traveling to attend.  The 2nd time I took MAG-40, with my wife, we had a similar schedule problem like yours and we couldn't take the class in Live Oak FL just a couple hours up the road.  We ended up flying 1100 miles and 3 states over to the next closest one in Arkansas and it was still totally worth it.
The Max Velocity Tactical  (MVT)classes are also worth the long trip - my friend and I drove up to WV from Florida and it was something like 17 hours and 900 miles each way.  Since the MVT class involved a long gun, a spare, a boatload of ammo, tactical gear etc I didn't feel like trying to fly up there with all that.  Some MVT attendees fly into Dulles and rent a car, and just ship a case or two of ammo to the training site.  You don't have to bring as much equipment and ammo for MAG-40 so even flying is much more do-able.

Suarez offers some classes in Hershey PA. I can strongly recommend CRG-1 and -2. I know not everyone is a fan of Gabe himself, but the instructors I had were excellent.

I'm not saying you should use an M1A for home defense, but I'm also not saying you shouldn't.
