There is a book by a guy who with his family are the last trappers in what is now Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.  I will try to remember the name, but even in ANWR it was not 50 years away from neighbors, let alone 500 years.

Bugs vary by place and from year to year.  AK is the same size as 1/3 of the lower 48.  Where I grew up, they are not bad generally.  Out here in Bristol Bay, the FFing black flies are what I hate.  They don't really bite they just swarm around you and crawl in your eyes and ears.  No-see-um's bite me the worst, and diesel is the only repellant that works on them, and then it works best alight.

The wife and I have a piece of property that we might be willing to let some or all of it go.  It is about 8 miles north of Homer, AK.  It has some trees, but black/bog spruce is not good for building cabins.  Water will be the issue unless you are willing to drink the swamp water, or haul.  The part we might piece off is on the back of our piece, and road to that end has never been developed and the owners says not in his lifetime.  It would be walk in in the summer and snow machine/4 wheeler winter.  It is tundra with islands of trees and higher ground on it.  The wife is out of town, due back later today, and I need to talk to her about it as we have not lived on the property in about 6 years but are planning on being their in the spring.
