For sale: FR-8 Spanish Mauser
« on: August 10, 2016, 06:14:13 PM »
Up for sale is an FR-8 Mauser carbine, in 7.62 Nato:

This is the same FR-8 that I bought from Booksmart a few months back.  I have no objection to the rifle, other than I think I would prefer something else.  Improvements made since then include replacing the ejector assembly and refinishing the stock.

When I bought it, the stock was rough.  Seriously, it looked like it had used as a mallet in some places.  Fortunately this was not my first rodeo, so with a little bit of sanding and a Lot of steam, 95% of the dents were able to be lifted at least 80% out.  This was followed by a stain that closely matched the original military finish color, (it doesnt look like it in the pictures, but it was a very close match.) and then finished with several coats of Birchwood Casey Tru-Oil.  The wood finish now looks like a respectable battle-worn service rifle should.

Interestingly, although the FR-8s were issued to rear eschelon forces, I would not be surprised if this particular sample was deployed along with the Spaniah colonial forces in Morocco.  I say this because when I went to remove the buttplate to finish the stock...  Sand.  Lots of sand was under there.

Above is Booksmart's original listing photo.  The buyer will get the bayonet, sling and stripper clips as shown, as well as a sight adjustment tool and OD rifle bag.

I am not putting a set price on this, rather I am inviting anyone interested to make me an offer via PM.  Trade offers are invited, as well as plain old cash deals.  Make an offer! :D

Cool looking bolt gun, Kaso. You did a really nice job on bringing out the beauty of the grain in the wood stock  :thumbup1.

Thank you.  If the grain had been 'pretty,' I would have skipped the stain, but I figured matching the original color was the next best thing.

Just going to bump this back up into the current feed.  :)

Someone did ask, so I'll say my ideal 'trade value' is around $400.  A trade that interests me, I may go a tad lower.  I don't really have anything in mind, so I am leaving the possibilities up to whatever you all want to get rid of. ;)

Another possibility, for any established member who wants to do a cash deal, is a payment plan.  Cash is tight for everyone, and I am not in a hurry to sell, so if paying by installment is easier for you, let me know.

Very cool story about the sand. I love working on wood like that. That is a very nice job. If I didn't have other more obsessive "wants" right now, I'd buy it.

The thing is, how did they get sand under there in the first place?  Did some grunt think the middle of the Sahara was a good place to remove the buttplate?  And if that was the case, it means that no one else bothered to remove it for over 50 years.

Thanks to everyone for the compliments on the wood.  I don't want to say it's not as good as it looks, but I finish wood for a living, so no 'battle rifle' grade wood finish really impresses me.  What did impress me was the way the dents and dings all lifted out.  That stock was... Bad.  Even I didn't expect the miracle of steam to do what it did. ;)

Another bump to the top of the feed.  Last one.  After this, I figure everyone who stops by will have seen it, and I'll leave the thread alone.

Two ideas for trades:  Yugo M24 or M48 Mauser's in 8mm, or a full size Makarov.  Other ideas entertained, those are just two that are interesting.

I would like to, but just had the house and car AC go out last week, so that used up the extra cash.

I tried to get this in a trade from Booksmart when you bought it.  I still want it but I don't know what to offer for it.

Much as I would have loved to sell this to a WTA member, I have a local sale lined up.  He seems very sincere, so we will see.
