True story.  Remember all the jokes about blinker fluid, headlamp filters and muffler bearings you'd play on the girls or the newbies in auto shop class?

Well, Ford has a product called "exhaust fluid"  labeled as just such, with an official Motorcraft part number.  We have some at my dealership as of today.

Seems that with the new super strict federal emission requirements on diesel pick-ups, Ford's engineers got busy and came out with this stuff.  It's basically water based LOADED with urea and ammonia from what I understand(sure smells like it).  It has to be put in it's own separate tank just like an oil injected 2-stroke.  But it's injected into the catalytic converter to aid in complete combustion of exhaust gasses.  Ford says you're supposed to fill this tank every oil change/3,000 miles.

So there you have it, there is such thing as exhaust fluid.  Things have sure changed from the days when you could bolt your carb off the chevelle right on the barracuda, make a minor linkage adjustment and you were GTG.
This may be considered as the true palladium of liberty. . . . The right of self defence is the first law of nature: in most governments it has been the study of rulers to confine this right within the narrowest limits possible. Wherever standing armies are kept up, and the right of the people to keep and bear arms is, under any colour or pretext whatsoever, prohibited, liberty, if not already annihilated, is on the brink of destruction- St. George Tucker, Blackstone's Commentaries

So...wait...does that mean I can get a ticket for not having gloves in the glove box or air in the air filter?

Norse.  Take a can of Good Beer.  Roll a new label on it that looks very MOPAR, call it "Blinker Fluid".  Sell it at CHECKERS and Advanced Auto Parts.

If the urea tank runs dry, by the way, the engine quits. It's not just diesel pickups, but the big semis are affected by it, too.

Can you pee into the urea tank if it runs out?
CaliforniaThere are many like it, but this one is mine.

Yeah the whole urea injection thing is likely to turn out to be a glorious pain in the nether regions.  Hopefully someone comes out with a tuner which eliminates the need for it.  Turbocharged diesel pickups were one few the few marginal bright spots in the American auto industry and Washington is doing their damnedest to kill them.

Cripes, what will they think of next.  Wouldn't it be easier and cheaper to run a propane injection system and just screw on a new cylinder of propane like a Bernzomatic bottle when the light on the dash comes on?   :scrutiny
