Installing a 3rd Row Seat in a Vehicle Not Built for It
« on: March 05, 2012, 02:48:02 pm »
Basically want to know the gear heads on here and your ideas pertaining to installing a 3rd Row seat or additional seat in the rear of my Jeep Cherokee (XJ).  Finding a seat that meets the dimensions is no problem but since there is no mounting hardware pre-installed this would be a bit trickier.  Trying to find a way to make it work.

The problem you're going to have is no leg room.  The back seat sits flat on the floor and has a well in front of it.  A third row seat won't have that.

You could cut a well, but now you're lowering the gas tank about 10 inches which kills your clearance.

And you'll have to ditch the spare tire for permanent, or find another mounting location for it.

With the unibody on your Cherokee, I think you might be looking at welding in reinforcement plates at your mounting locations, so as not to have the seat ripped out under a heavy load.

You might also want to see what AZ law says about the project. It's generally pretty lax on what's street legal, but it's always good to know for sure.

Honestly the 3rd Row Seat will be a toddler in a car seat and a 4yr old.  Leg room can be minimal - the room is there.  The spare tire is AN issue - but one I think I found the solution for.   :shrug  Right now the seating space is the key.  And no I don't want to cut a well.

Regarding the requirements I've not been able to find anything pertaining to this particular project.   :shrug  Added pain (depending on POV) is that per DMV definition of the XJ as a Station Wagon rather than an SUV.  WIN on my Registration but...

True on what Jesse said about the law.  Just be sure.

Hmmm seems doing it in an XJ (or YJ) for that matter may be questionable at best.  Ok - on to other solutions batman!

I'd be very leery I'm just not sure how comfortable I would be with a homebrew setup especially for kids. I'm no safety junkie by any stretch as most of you know;) But it makes me nervous designing anything like this that I know kids are going to ride in. Also you don't have any kind of traffic accident testing to back up the idea in how it would hold up in an impact, or worse a roll over. Granted road travel is dangerous anyhow but just something that would worry me. I'd look into other options if it were me;)

    Take care!
