WeTheArmed.com joins the Second Media family of sites
« on: November 28, 2016, 04:20:48 PM »
Hello All,

It has been a little over 8 years since the founding of WTA.  It has become a unique place in that the membership is very knowledgeable as well as very civil.   One of the things that draws people to WTA is the friendliness of the membership.  As an admin, it's wonderful to see new members welcomed.  It's great to see questions answered, even if they are some of the most basic questions.  The WTA membership is just awesome.  This is one of the few boards where's people can discuss guns, politics and religion and still remain civil.

Over the past couple of months, we have been working on a way to ensure that WTA can continue to be the excellent forum that it currently is.  As some of you may know, WTA was created when there was fallout from another forum, where the Admins/Mods fought among each other.  To ensure continuity, WTA has joined the Second Media family.  This family includes the likes of 1911Forum.com, RimfireCentral.com, TheFirearmBlog.com and many more.  For those in Utah, UtahConcealedCarry.org is also part of the Second Media family.

What does this change mean for WTA?  On the front end, you won't really notice a change.  The same staff will remain.  The same boards will remain.  The same rules will govern the site.  The same topic areas are still available.  Second Media will be handling all of the back end administration and will ensure that WTA will continue in its excellence.  We are excited for this new change and for the next steps of WTA.

If you have questions about this transition, feel free to send me a PM or to comment below.

    Are we expanding?

While this forum is open to and welcomes everyone, part of its allure is the small, tight knit community feel to it. Does this mean that WTA is becoming a conglomerate?

Nope, just getting a little help with the maintenance and management side of things. Continuity is key and the spirit this site is built on is what will be maintained. No changes to the rules or how you already conduct business here.

The word 'continuity' has been mentioned multiple times.  If life for regular members is not affected, what exactly does that mean for the board?  What is 'continuity?'

Maintaining the same rules, principles and values the site is run on. Basically if you where not introduced to me it is not likely you would know until you would see me posting about fixing an issue on the site.

Me either... It could be that in inherited this account and it might have had some odd restrictions put on it originally. I will do some digging when I get to my desk in the morning.

I see.  Steve's post really never said what he needed to say.  So are we to understand that WTA is now under new management/ownership?

If so, that really doesn't bother me.  It just took me a few hours to figure out what Steve was actually saying.

I've long been impressed with the quality of discourse on this forum, to the point that I feel comfortable recommending it to my 16 year-old granddaughters for reference and information.  (If you knew these girls, you'd realize that it's not as backhanded a compliment as it sounds!)  They are pretty serious gun geeks, and they've learned a lot here.  Granted, some of what they learned is going to cost me a bunch of money down the road, but that's okay.

Thanks to all of you for making this a fun place to hang out!

I see some very good forums listed, as well as some not-so-nice ones - forums I avoid for a reason.  This tells me that Second Media's ownership is not going to result in heavy-handed interference with how we conduct the forum, as they allow quite a range of behavior to exist under their banner.  We generally behave ourselves here, so I can't see any problems developing.

This was very important to our decision.  We checked out some of the other forums they administer.  In fact, I was already a member on 5 of the other forums without even knowing they were run by Second Media.  One of my favorites on the list is TheFirearmBlog.com.  So much good information there.

I'd agree with kaso on this as well. First off I do feel WTA is a special place in the way it's been handled from an admin/staff prospective, and that's from someone with a fair bit of experience running forums and whatnot. For those who don't know I've been on staff for several forums since the early 2000's mostly airsoft related and currently admin for the Michigan Airsoft forums since no one else wanted or could do it. So I'm going to be hopeful that going forward we're not going to see any real changes to WTA that's what I see as the ideal.

I will say looking through the list of sites I see allot of forums I also have accounts on, and I've been happy with the way they are run. I also note a few I don't care for nearly as much. But while I didn't recognize the name Second Media, I do recall when they took over several of the sites listed, mostly I recall a new owner taking place in the last year or two on several. None the less I don't recall any major changes on most of them. A few went a different route I wasn't as happy with, however it likely had more to do with changes in mod/admin staff as a result of the change than actually anything related to Second Media doing anything so to speak.

So for those not familiar with them, or these other forums I'd say my experience is what Phil mentioned above that I haven't seen many changes when they have taken over a new site.

Noted. There are no immediate plans to make a change to your own personal security protocols. It is still a good idea to keep passwords at least a little long and complicated. Also try to use different passwords for websites you hang out on from say your email or other important personal sites you log into. This is all just best practice stuff. I am personally genuinely lazy when it comes to this stuff so I use a program called "lastpass", if you are on a mac there is a good one called "Keeper" I am told is way better on mac than on PC.  That being said if you are like my wife and keep passwords in a little black book that works too. She stands firmly by the fact that if someone has acquired the little booklet and knows what all the gibberish is in there.  We will have a bigger issue than someone hacking her email at that point and will be reporting a break and enter.
