Website changes etc.
« on: May 04, 2017, 12:53:28 PM »
So guys if anyone has noticed;) I changed my site up yesterday, spend an ungodly amount of time updating very old software to the newest versions etc. I'm very much still working on it, but after yesterday's marathon I just had to get it back up and running and able to take orders again. I do believe I'm out of the woods on most of it though there are some things I've gotta get back live like the gallery, and some of the information posts etc. The theme isn't exactly how I want it either but it's close enough to function until I've got time to mess with it again.

So if you go to the site and notice things look different that's why;) I've been meaning to do this project for a long time now like nearly as long as I've been sponsoring this forum;) But I'd kept putting it off, and yesterday I ran into a snag and realized how much time I've spent trying to keep it running without spending the time to upgrade.

And for techy guys wondering why I didn't keep up to date years ago here is the answer, for non techs you can skip this section;) Basically the backend software was going along fine until around 2010 they removed the ability to edit orders. Which for most companies probably wasn't a big deal. But with me I'm editing orders 10+ weeks later all the time. So I held updates until they added in order editing again. I went and installed a test version of it, and the editing was only available for a week after placing an order. Which again is a no go for me, so I waited. And eventually after about 5 years they had fixed all the weird issues I would have had;) But then they also changed so much code that a direct upgrade path just wasn't available, and even an incremental upgrade would be full of issues because of the code problems with editing stuff in the middle. So I started looking into a way to update the database of products and orders to the newer version so I could get back on track with current releases but each time I realized it would take me  a ton of time so I put it off. Finally I found a way to bring it up to current, though I'm still carrying several irritating bugs, thankfully they are on the back end and not visitor facing so I'll button those up over time. And for those wondering about security etc, that's one of the reasons my site hasn't been linked with payments, because as it stood before it was outdated, and possibly there could have been exploits etc. I never had an issue, but I wanted to limit any customer data stored on the site. So with the new payment system I had to bring it all to current and keep it there, because even with encrypted data etc, I need all the holes that could have been there patched current.

So give me a couple days to iron out some of the minor bugs, and then if you guys find things wrong feel free to shoot me a note and I'll start fixing those issues;) If you have any weird issues with placing orders etc, just shoot me a note.

Take care!

IllinoisThere’s a story about a turtle and a scorpion. Scorpion is stranded on a river bank. Turtle sees this and asks Scorpion to get on his back and he’ll take him across the river. Scorpion gets on Turtle’s back and they go into the river. When they’re about halfway across, Scorpion stings Turtle. As Turtle is sinking, knowing they’re both going to die, he asks Scorpion "Why did you sting me, we’re both going to die?" and Scorpion says "It’s not my fault; it’s what I am."

Thanks appreciate it;) I'm still fixing bugs finding all sorts of minor things but so far things seem on track;)

I'd been meaning to do this for years now and I had figured it would take me a solid week of fiddling and research so despite yesterday going badly it's better than I expected thus far;) The last version of the site was a bit of a cobble here and there and I had wanted to give it a facelift so it was due. I'll likely do some more image and layout editing. And once I figure out if I'm going to bring back the photo gallery or just keep it integrated into the products themselves. Lots of minor stuff.

But as time permits I'll work through it all;) Downsides of being the one and only guy, most days I'm stitching leather and playing secretary but there are also days I've gotta put on my techy hat for the day as well;)

    Take care!

More changes were made;) Long version, had a couple bugs I didn't catch from the last day of fiddling and ended up having to roll back the entire update and redo it all from the previous backup. But now I've gotten most of the bugs squashed. I've got a couple minor ones on the back end of the site but they aren't anything customers can see or have to deal with;) Overall though I'm pretty happy with the way it is coming and the mobile version of the website is much improved.

So coming soon Sarah will go through and fix my horrible spelling and grammar;) Since that's been on the planned list for a while but while she's been checking things out for me she's got about 500 times I've screwed up in the text;) I also will likely revamp the descriptions from the holsters to make them more uniform and a few other things along with image updates etc.

So more to come but not this week unless I find something broken;) Back to stitching leather again and let me tell ya I'm happy to get back to getting actual work done;)

Do we forget that cops were primarily still using 6 Shot Revolvers well through the mid 80's? It wasn't until after 1986 that most departments then relented and went to autos.
Capacity wasn't really an issue then... and honestly really it's not even an issue now.
Ray Chapman, used to say that the 125-grain Magnum load’s almost magical stopping power was the only reason to load .357 instead of .38 Special +P ammunition into a fighting revolver chambered for the Magnum round. I agree. - Massad Ayoob
