Wounded Warrior Project Email Exchange
by Gun Talk on Tuesday, November 13, 2012 at 11:56am ·

After Sunday's show, we've gotten many emails about Tom's remarks after WWP declined an interview request on Gun Talk Radio because it's a firearms-related show. We've also seen the forums that are suggesting many things that are not true. So, I'm going to lay it all out right here.

We thought it would be great to book the WWP on the Veteran's Day show to promote the organization, so I contacted them. I was flabbergasted when their PR contact, Leslie, sent me an email saying they could not participate because our show dealt with firearms. Knowing that WWP has had a booth at trade shows and various gun shows across the US, takes wounded warriors on hunts and range days, raffles guns and accessories as fundraisers, etc., their policy didn't make much sense. I forwarded the email on to Tom to get his take.

-Sarah

The following is the complete email exchange:

====================

Hello, Leslie:

Sarah forwarded me your email after I asked her to invite the Wounded Warriors Project to join me on "Tom Gresham's Gun Talk" radio show.

I'm stunned at your email saying that the WWP doesn't participate in an interview or activity related to firearms.  Inasmuch as there are 90 million gun owners and most of them support wounded veterans, I think they would be shocked to hear that they are, by way of their hobbies, somehow not worthy of helping with the Wounded Warriors Project.

 Does your policy apply also to police agencies and the military, since they are "related to firearms?"

I'm hoping that we have misunderstood your email.  Can you confirm that it is, in fact, an official policy of the Wounded Warriors Project to not do interviews with or participate in any activity related to firearms?

Thank you.

Tom Gresham

============

Good afternoon --

While we appreciate your interest in Wounded Warrior Project® (WWP) you are correct that we decline the media opportunity.

Please note the following notice that appears on our website which also applies to WWP public awareness policy and inquiries from media outlets:

http://www.woundedwarriorproject.org/additional-opportunities.aspx

WWP does not co-brand, create cause marketing campaigns or receive a percentage or a portion of proceeds from companies in which the product or message is sexual, political or religious in nature, or from alcohol or firearms companies.

 Thank you for your inquiry.

====================

Thanks for confirming that, Leslie.  It was a simple opportunity to promote the WWP on a national program in an effort to send donations your way.

 I'll pass along the info that you don't want or need the help of America's gun owners.

 Best regards,

 Tom Gresham

=====================

Good morning --

This policy is not a judgment on those who own and use firearms – clearly every member of our armed forces has been trained in the use of firearms and then called on to use them in the course of their service to this country.

Our position regarding firearms and alcohol is in response to the struggles that many injured service members face with substance abuse and suicide and the roles those items often play in those issues.

 Thank you.

 LESLIE A. COLEMAN

 public relations director

=============================

Hello, Leslie:

Thank you for that explanation.

I do think -- and I'm being as kind as possible -- that it's the nuttiest thing I've heard in years. Suicides are not linked to firearms. Japan has a much higher rate of suicide than does the U.S., and they have essentially no firearms. Suicide is a serious issue irrespective of the methodology used.

This explanation doesn't pass even the most simple "does this make sense" test.

Your policy does, in fact, brand firearms and the companies which make them as undesirables, and by association, you are saying that those who own and use firearms for recreation, hunting, self protection, and other safe and legal uses are to be avoided.

It's certainly your option to ostracize the firearms industry, the 90 million gun owners in America, and the media which support firearms safety training.

At this point, I feel an obligation to make sure the millions who listen to my radio show and watch my two national television series know about your policy.

I cannot fully express how much I feel you are doing a disservice to our wounded veterans, and how disappointed I am to discover this bias at the Wounded Warriors Project.

Sincerely,

Tom Gresham

Glancing through the roster, it looks like at a minimum, their head PR person has no military experience. Basically just PR firms. Wounded Warrior is a great non-profit, but it looks like the professional non-profit folks are trying to move in as well because it has decent funding. PR flacks tend to like nice fuzzy soft images. Which is not exactly the core demographic...

I sincerely doubt many folks of any involvement with the actual military folks would endorse telling firearms folks to toss off.

I would venture to say no.

Very disappointed to hear about this as the Wounded Warrior  Project has done some great work helping our brothers in need. I have no doubt that as the work gets out there donations will take a hit.

This Policy of theirs is going to cost them Millions.

Only for people who are so single minded that they put the Second Amendment before those who paid the price to guard it.

I've met some of those men, some of the most severely injured, shaken their hands, at least the ones who still had hands. I find it despicable that people would look at all they've sacrificed already and then throw them under the bus in the name of principle.

This presumes that, if I have $200 to donate, I can only donate it to WWP if I want to help wounded vets. It is quite possible to take my $200 and use it some other way that directly benefits wounded warriors, but most certainly does NOT benefit WWP.

Now, the proper rejoinder from WWP is that they don't care, so long as the wounded warriors are getting the money, whether it goes through WWP or someone else is immaterial. Bet they won't say that.

In reality, this sounds like some knee jerk, boilerplate, SOP policy of a hired PR firm. If WWP has any sense, they will fire the PR firm, say that it was all their idea and not WWP's, and they had no idea their hired hands were doing such idiotic things, and press forward.

This pretty much covers it. There are other organizations doing this good work, and they aren't (to my knowledge) taking a stand against the freedoms that their beneficiaries sacrificed for. I will support these other organizations before I will support WWP.

Just had a thought. Maybe WWP should advertise in RECOIL. You know, since both are anti-gun. Probably pretty cheap to buy space in RECOIL right now too. Good value for WWP.

I was thinking about that while I went to get coffee (I heart third shift, not). What are some other, comparable, organiztions? I'm all about piling on WWP over this, but it is imperative that the P suffers, not the WW. If I'm about to start pimp-slapping WWP to my friends and associates, I want to be able to, in the very next breath, say " ... and until they undo the cranial-rectal insertion, you should send your money HERE instead."

So, where is the "here"?

I'm surprised...but at the same time not surprised.  I'm a WWP Alumni member and have participated in a number of their events, one being a day at the old Blackwater training facility where various firearm companies (Ronnie Barret's son is a bit of a tool...I didn't care for his attitude) and AFAIK they all donate to WWP so I know they have no problem taking their money.  Understand this, the WWP is now one of if not THE largest disabled OEF/OIF veteran's groups and I've noticed some time ago that they are more corperate machine than charitable organization and they can now afford to pretty much pick & choose which really really disabled vet is going on a lavish African hunting safari without considering anyone else in the name of fairness solely for PR to get more money.

If you want to give money to an organization that really needs it but will not only spend it right but I'm willing to bet that they wouldn't shy away from ANY exposure is Freedom Alliance.  I pretty much only deal with them now because I feel that they truly care about ME and the smaller events are about the people and not how much swag we can expect to get.  I'm really tired of the WWP giving away a lot of expensive stuff to everyone because it has come to the point where a good number of vets expect to get it and will get pissed if they get less stuff than the last time.  Last time I checked the events are for our mental and physical health and a place to socialize with others that are going through the same struggles....not a place to clean up with free stuff.

They treat us like mushrooms, keep us in the dark and feed us poo all night.  I really do love 3rd shift.

I wish I had the source to share but I can remember where I read it but apparently WWP paid a FORMER employee 200K a year. I dont know how long he was paid after he left but he was gettin a check for 200K and wasn't even working for WWP anymore.  It would be interesting to know what percentage of the funds received actually went to wounded warriors.

I just heard of an organization on Gun Talk by the name of "HAVA" Honored American Veterans Afield http://www.honoredveterans.org

I've been on a joint HAVA/WWP event and I found it very confusing to participate in any other HAVA events as trying to contact anyone is near impossible.  It seems that they make it easy to take your money but difficult to do what they are there for...doing stuff for the vets (like myself).

I think there's way to much single-mindedness on this.  My expectation is that WWP has no position on the 2A, and that the girl who was responding to those emails was just trying to get out of Tom Gersham's way.  He was pushing for a reason they declined.  Instead of just taking No for an answer he made a federal case out of it.

This whole thing is dumb.  Some lackey manning an email box was trying to get Gersham off her back, who is pushy on these issues, and all of the sudden WWP is in the center of a political firestorm, a place everybody knows they absolutely don't want to and try very hard not to be.

It never ceases to amaze me how the gun community is always ready to swallow whole any group that so much as looks at them sideways, even by accident, or more commonly, through distantly perceived implications and semantic surgery.

Full retard my ass.  Everyone involved is going full retard.

Yeah, kind of what I think...the worst thing that can happen to a good idea sometimes is it becomes successful and falls prey to the corporate games where someone's livelyhood is now based on not what the organizations original purpose was but on trying to alienate as few entities as possible to keep a positive cash flow coming in...

And also I think its correct to say the core services for these vets is still being provided from the .GOV side of the house (Military treatment facilities and VA) while the WWP provide ancillary services and such to provide not only for veterans secondary (emotional) needs but also to provide public awareness and at least a central, focused entity for donations.

Interesting note that WWP has co-branded with gun companies in the past...

http://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2012/11/14/wounded-warrior-used-to-like-guns/

Does anyone actually think that the email girl speaks for WWP?  Until I hear WWP publicly back her comments (which I still believe were made under duress from Gersham) in a formal press release, I can't believe they do.

She wonked up.  I think everyone needs to give up the crusade here and put away the ropes and torches.  God forbid one of us ever screw up. :eh

You know, this whole bunch of bull really has not affected my opinion of the WWP.  It has not affected my future donations to them.  If they want to decline support from gun companies, that is their perogative.

Our OIF/ OEF vets are coming back to us with every form of physical, mental, emotional, and psychological damage.  We owe them our support, in their recovery - It is our DUTY.  Wounded Warrior has done, and is doing more for our wounded vets than any other single organization out there.  To withdraw support from them, is to withdraw support from the vets.  Would you avoid helping a wounded vet, if you knew he was a 'fud?'  Even if he was a known Brady supporter?  Of course you wouldn't!  Same goes for WWP.

WWP is not campaigning against our guns.  They are not anti-gun.  They are pro-veteran. (even if they do have a bit of internal bureaucracy going on)  Maintain your support for them.  I will.

As a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, they are required to report it...

Quote
WWP continuously strives to keep administrative and fundraising costs associated with the operation of WWP as low as possible. Based on our fiscal year 2011 audited financial statements ending September 30, 2011, 82.8 percent of total expenditures went to provide services and programs for Wounded Warriors and their families.
