Don't the Germans kinda sweep the Third Reich under the rug? History doesn't seem to be their strong suit, at least between 1939 and 1945 ish.
Based on knowing several Germans pretty well (two with PhDs and one with a Masters degree), they know it happened but all they know about it is the Allied brain-washing version of it*. They don't think things went bad because their government got taken over by criminal thugs and crushed dissent, they think the 3rd Reich came about because Germans were too much like those selfish greedy Americans. Whatever that means, they believe it no matter how nonsensical it is. I threw in their educational status just to show this kind of lunacy isn't a matter of being uneducated, I think it's a matter of brainwashing from early age so that "of course the government is supposed to control every part of our lives" is just part of everyone's background.
* By Allied brain-washing version, I mean the poisoned version the post-war victors, especially the French, worked into the German government so as to permanently keep the German mind sick, weak, and self-despising and avoiding growing up, lest the Germans ever shake it off grow strong and re-conquer the French.
