The AR-15 bruised his shoulder?  I have to assume it was not chambered in 5.56...  Though then again, with the way his article presented it, it sounds like a .50 Beowulf, but was more probably a .22 conversion.  ::)

Suffered through the whole thing.  Thankfully, it was short.  Obviously a former European with no appreciation or understanding of either the Second Amendment or our culture would bring a failed European gun control plan into his gun shop.

I wonder how many gun owners did actually agree to be interviewed, but the newspaper simply did not get the sound bites that they wanted, so they kept looking until the found one who could give them what they wanted.  The reasoned, accurate stuff got left on the cutting room floor and edited out of the text.

I'll not bother tackling the false statements which abound in just about every sentence.

Even so, I thank you for posting.  It is important to keep current with the propaganda.

I didn't realize my AR15 kicked so hard and was so loud even with hearing protections.   It's a shame the reporter didn't get a chance to shoot some "real guns" that do have some recoil and real muzzle blast.

Thank you for posting, but this is ridiculous. We laugh now, but there are masses of people who have never shot a gun before who will take articles like this to heart. I seriously fear for what is to become of gun ownership in the future.

Gun ownership as a whole will actually improve and diversify, while at the same time the left and the right will continue to drift apart, making it even more of a polarizing issue.

Yep.  I was thinking of my very similar H&R .45-70 single shot fired with the Buffalo Bore 405 grain "Magnum" load at 2,100 fps.  Mine has an antique curved metal butt plate.  Without a slip on recoil pad, it will definitely get your attention.

I'd love to see that reporter shoot either, especially, as you say held "kinda loose."

Stephen Green's (aka Vodkapundit) comment at pjmedia.com/instapundit:

Other than the fact that Gersh Kuntzman was apparently holding the rifle incorrectly, firing it incorrectly, made an incorrect (and shameful) claim about having PTSD, was incorrect that Mateen used an AR-15 in the Orlando terror attack, and was incorrect about being able to purchase a fully automatic “tactical machine gun,” this is a totally accurate piece he’s written for the Daily News.

Somehow I get the feeling that "anxious and irritable" is pretty much the author's mindset regarding life in general.

"gave me a temporary case of PTSD"

WTF.  Just give him a 7mm Rem Mag, or a .300 Win Mag, bolt action then he will realize what a rifle IS.  I first shot 7mm Rem Mag at 12.  Yes it hurt, but no big deal.  What is the quote, "Pain fades and chicks dig scars."  Man up that is about all I have to say to these "people".

It is all about perspective.  That's why you give him a shotgun first.  The first time I shot a shotgun, my shoulder hurt for hours.  Literally.  The first time I shot a 9mm, I thought it was the loudest hand cannon in existence.  Yes, I was younger then, but now?  Meh.  A 9mm feels impressive until you shoot a .45.  The .45 is king until you shoot a S&W 500.  It's all about perspective.

I don't disagree.  I find rifles, especially magnum bolt actions, to be more...Shocking to senses than shotguns.  About the same age as I first fired dad's 7mm, I got to shoot a 16 GA SxS, and a 12 GA semi auto.  Probably the fact I had a little more instruction, but they did not seem as intense.

Seems Mr. Stelmach, the interviewee in the OP's video/article, is saying the author pulled a Couric on him.  Real journalism seems to be rapidly going the way of the dinosaur; considering the namby-pamby metroneuter who wrote the article I don't have a hard time believing Stelmach.

In the case of the original Couric hit-job, VCDL had the  foresight to make its own video recording of the interview and so was able to counter to some degree.  Looks like that needs to be SOP now.

    https://www.facebook.com/doubletapshootingrange/posts/1146174612105699

Yesterday the man in this video from the NY Daily News called and asked if he could come and interview us about the basic principles of how an AR-15 works. We acknowledged his offer so that we could prove that an AR-15 is indeed a great and safe weapon as stated in the video. After the video was filmed there was another Q&A type conversation on how things work in other countries, what are some of the things others believe would be a step into the right direction of gun control. To our knowledge we did not know that Mr. Kuntzman would completely turn things around and make our establishment look like one of anti-gun advocates. We have received dozens of phone from all over the country in regards to the article. Many of these callers expressed disgust with the article and told us to stay away from the media. I can assure everyone that we do not support mental health screenings like they do in Europe and we don't think that government officials should take away guns from people as it was portrayed in the article. Currently we are doing everything we can to take this article down because after reading it we are just as disgusted about it as all of you are. Our team here at Double Tap would like to sincerely apologize for the misunderstanding and report that we are doing everything in our power to get this article removed. I implore all of our supporters to share our apology with everyone in-order to help defend ourselves from the media who is doing anything in their power to blemish the face of all gun owners and attempting to add more rule to the fire of the attempt of the liberal gun-grabbing agenda. To those that are writing negative reviews about us, please understand we had no intentions of having this article cause such an issue, nor intentions of us looking like anti gun advocates but, to educate which in turn did the complete opposite due to Mr. Kuntzman. If anyone has anymore questions or concerns please feel free to come in or call us we will gladly discuss this issue with you. And for the record, if you get a bruised shoulder or PTSD from shooting an AR-15 you may be a Katie Couric, liberal with ought testicular fortitude.

    Fantastic!  :clap

It does my heart good to know that no gunshop owner would say those things.

What? A journo was being a lying sack of s___? That makes way more sense. I mean, c'mon, the establishments name is double tap. Oh, for sure, there are gun shop owners (though not many) who would say that and much more.  Just so long as they don't get called out and identified by name.  Bad publicity will kill a gun shop.

That said, it is good that these guys seem to want to be on the right side of it.

This is another good reason that, as a lawyer, I tell my clients to NEVER give interviews to the media or to discuss any controversial topic in their presence.

I guess politicians must do so, but look at how it turns out for them -- both sides.  It's always the out of context "sound bite".  The quest for the "gotcha" moment.  Depending on the almost certain built in bias, the reporter all too often has an unshakeable need to report only the sensational.  The story bears little resemblance to reality.  If it's not sensational, you can bet they will make it so, sacrificing truth and objectivity on the altar of ratings, viewer or reader volume, and selling ad space.

In a free market economy, you can hardly blame them, irrespective of lost or forgotten journalism ethics.  All the more reason, though, to simply keep your mouth shut.

This is my wife shooting my Mosin carbine for the first time - most folks will probably agree it's got a smidge more noise and recoil than an AR-15.

At last night's board meeting the president shared a letter he received from some outfit in San Francisco, asking if they could come to our range to film a test of a theory that some food product between two boards would stop a bullet.

They have to reach out to a range almost a thousand miles away to test this theory?  It seems we failed to respond in time.  Standard procedure anymore.
