Oddly, I believe I missed posting in this thread. Normally, I'm all over export control related threads as the unofficial ITAR mod.  :panic

ITAR is largely obsolete, as it was basically written for 1970's or 1980's tech. Dual use tech is even more slippy. One of the few positive things I've seen the POTUS done was announce a working committee for reforming ITAR, as it's a huge regulatory speedbump in our international trade. It's entirely Constitutional (thus legal), but a pain in the neck and outdated. State Department issues rulings on edge cases that make life even harder.

Here's the reform notes thus far: http://www.state.gov/documents/organization/181028.pdf

Yes, even Obama does some stuff right once in a while. This is definitely one of them.

That said. Distributing firearm or weapon design files internationally still requires an export license. Don't do it without consulting very expensive lawyers. You can give them to each and every US person (US citizen, resident alien and a few other entities) to your heart's content. It's only transferring it internationally or to a foreign person/entity within the US that it becomes illegal without an export license.

So, yes, it's bloody insane in this day and age, but it's still the law. No, it's not some conspiracy or thought police. It's just a largely but not entirely obsolete law, that is still enforced.

I just had a thought. What are the ramifications for a US citizen downloading gun files hosted abroad? Could you potentially run into import control issues?

Nice, really taking advantage it looks like.  A pity the machines for that are half a million and up.

As far as I know, there are no restrictions on importing ITAR data. Reexport is still controlled. Also, you may have to comply with export laws of the country you are exporting the data from.

Random example. L3 Wescam is Canadian, they can send you ITAR data, and you cannot give it back to other Canadians.
