I've considered it but haven't looked into it too seriously.  I have my liability insurance and I know that doesn't cover court costs.  I'd always wondered how many of the policies have had to pay out or provide services.  Being insurance, it's a nice to have.  If it's a clear cuts self-defense case, the financial impact may be minimal, maybe $5000.  I think most of these plans are like $300-$500 per year.  You can save up that $5000 over a number of years.

I'd love to hear of any one else's experiences as well.

All I can say for sure is, a legal defense would break me (financially).

I'd rather spend the cost of 2 boxes of ammo a month to (1) keep a lawyer on their retainer program with drastically reduced legal costs should I need them in general, and (2) have insurance in the event of a self defense shooting.

I'm big on insurance.  Because of the low cost, I raised my Liability coverage on my car to $500,000 / $500,000 knowing that this money would cover injury to others and my legal defense costs.  On my old jalopy, that amounts to $75 a month total car insurance bill (I don't have Collision for my 2004, just Comprehensive).

Here in Arizona, with our Mandatory Minimum sentences if a case involving a firearm goes to trial (most don't...they take a deal instead), I want to have good representation to protect sick old me from the System.  I study and learn what I need to, in order to avoid being in the wrong (as much as possible) so that my representation will be in a position to protect me.

I have Armed Citizen Legal Defense Network and have for a few years.  I recently added Silver level coverage with US Concealed Carry Association.  Is that enough?  I honestly do not know.  However, I am the primary support for my family so less than $300/year for an edge that can keep me out of prison is a good investment.
